Geraldo, Bongino spar over school shooting: ‘Criminals don’t give a damn about your gun laws’

While Dan Bongino lamented the jump to politicization following the Texas school shooting and sought a respectful dialogue, Geraldo Rivera grew increasingly combative in reaction to the tragedy, going as far as to declare the Second Amendment “makes me sick.”

The pair of Fox News hosts joined Sean Hannity on his eponymous program Tuesday night in an attempt to find some common ground on what might have protected the at least 19 children and two teachers from being killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Salvador Ramos, the 18-year-old suspect faced no opposition in beginning his heinous massacre, which all parties agreed may have been prevented if armed security were present at schools.

“The only place you, Dan and I diverge is,” Rivera argued, “it is not to me irrelevant that in the last 10 days 30 people have been killed by two 18-year-olds with assault weapons. How can you buy an assault weapon on your 18th birthday when you cannot buy a beer?”

He went on to promote a juvenile weapons ban and asked, “Why is that unAmerican? How does that violate the Second Amendment?”

“You know, over a decade in law enforcement,” Bongino, a former NYPD officer and member of the Secret Service, explained, “I arrested a lot of people who had illegal guns and you know, they love your idea for gun laws…You know why? Because nobody gives a damn about gun laws, and especially -”

“What that kids can’t buy assault weapons?” Rivera interrupted.

“This is why it’s so hard to come on with you,” Bongino said, exasperated as Rivera attempted to further his point, “because you just never let me talk.”

The host of “Unfiltered” petitioned for mutual respect under the circumstances and went on, “In my experience, yes, I don’t want an 18-year-old who is incompetent, potentially mentally ill and a homicidal maniac to have assault weapons. You and I both agree,” he continued and even conceded the use of the term “assault weapon” for the conversation even though “there’s no such thing” and it’s an “unnecessarily hostile term.”

“You’re talking about an obviously psychologically disturbed young man here who walked into a school and shot a bunch of school kids,” he continued. “You really believe like he was sitting there reading a law book beforehand.”

Preempting Rivera’s response, Bongino said that an argument for stricter laws would penalize the thousands of innocent 18-year-olds who have a right to own a firearm to which the co-host of “The Five” replied, “So what?”

“So what?” Bongino shot back, incredulous. “Geraldo, we live in a free country.”

Even Hannity said Rivera was “living in a fantasy world” for suggesting murderers would follow the laws if they were stricter to which he replied, “Maybe I am,” before thrusting responsibility on former President Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas), who are all slated to speak at the National Rifle Association convention later this week, to promote restrictions because “the way the Second Amendment is construed now makes me sick.”

Bongino had alluded to the conversation heading down this path at the onset when he referenced President Joe Biden’s address to the nation over the tragedy.

“First it’s too late to not politicize it…The president of the United States just came out and what could’ve been a great healing moment for all of us to be able to mourn together, I mean he is the president of the United States, he decided to attack the gun lobby,” he said.

“In a moment where he could have been a great healer and unifier he chose that moment to start screaming at Americans and the gun lobby…Cutesy time with these people is over. They don’t care,” he noted and later applied to Rivera’s argument.

“For the last 30 years of your life you’ve been a very wealthy successful guy,” Bongino pointed out. “Nobody disputes that. You can go out tomorrow and buy security if you wanted to – the Second Amendment makes you sick. Why?”

“The criminals don’t care about your gun laws, they love them because it keeps law-abiding people unarmed while they don’t give a damn about your laws. I did this for a living. They laugh at gun laws and they love people like you advocating for gun laws because you can buy armed protection and they can go in high crime communities and prey on innocent people who can never get a hold of a gun because they actually obey the law,” the former cop concluded.

  1. Geraldo is a pompass ass who likes to hear himself talk! Go back to looking into Capone;s vault you jack wagon!

    1. Why do they keep him. You want strict gun laws Gerry – go to Chicago and don’t go with any security.

  2. Just wondering if he had been on meds from a young age to control him, instead of guns he could of used a couple of jerry cans of gas and killed more, he was deranged

  3. Everyone needs to understand that until a mentally ill person either hurts themselves or someone else almost nothing can be done to prevent those injuries.

  4. Harryaldo is full of crap as usual. Hey FOX, hes next to be fired! Get with the times. Better yet , fill out a employment form for him with the Times. Thats where he belongs.

  5. when I was 18 I had graduated for the USARMY Advance Infantry School in Ft. Ord California. I thank God I did not have to go to war in 1958. Are you suggesting I should not have been allowed to buy a semiautomatic rifle to protect myself and my family?

  6. Let’s start with the BIG law against “murder”, then all the other laws this killer violated. There is NO law that would stop him except one that says, if you are known to police for multiple times of violence against your family, you are involuntarily committed until it’s determined you are NOT a threat to the family or community. Maybe we could get back some of that $40 BILLION we sent to the Ukraine for *their* safety and use it to work on our own? No? Democrats would rather send the Dept of Justice after parents at school board meetings, calling them “domestic terrorists”. Clearly.

  7. What slow heraldo and all the democrats don’t understand or understand but want to block freedom, is that if guns are not allowed period, the bad guys will be the only ones with guns that they bring in from abroad, mexico, canada, the sea, by air…. you name it. Has he NEVER heard of SMUGGLERS???

  8. Geraldo makes me sick; how is he even still relevant? Such a morn his comments don’t even justify a response.

  9. Everytime I watch a fox news program, if Rivera is on the show as a guest or host (The Five), I turn to different channel so as to not frustrate myself or throw a brick at the TV. Mr. Rivera is as big a hippocrat as there are and when he speaks all I hear are lies.

    1. Geraldo loves the sound of his own voice. His verbal fisticuffs w/ Dan Bongino are entertaining, though.

  10. Rivera argued, “How can you buy an assault weapon on your 18th birthday when you cannot buy a beer?”

Is Gerald Riviera making an argument on lowering the age to purchase alcohol or raising the age to purchase a firearm? What other legal areas would lowering, or raising, the age cover?

    1. Rivera might as well ask, “how can you murder people when there is a law against it?”.

  11. I live in Chicago, which has possibly the toughest gun laws in the country.

A person gets shot/shot at in Chicago every two hours, all year long.

The simple fact is that Bongino is correct….criminals don’t care about gun laws, they love them because it keeps law-abiding people unarmed while they don’t give a damn about the laws.

    1. Chicago
      May to Date
      Shot & Killed: 42
      Shot & Wounded: 227
      Total Shot: 269
      Total Homicides: 44

    2. Isn’t that one of those places if you don’t have one, the city issues you one on the way in?

  12. I don’t know why FOX keeps Geraldo on their shows. He’s ill-tempered, knows-it-all, interrupts constantly, as if he’s the only one who can make his point, just RUDE!

  13. Democrat never approach a contentious subject with open eyes or ears. It’s too easy to see or hear something inconvenient. So they approach only with a closed mind and an open mouth.

And then insist they won the argument. Unbelievable.
