It’s no secret that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and squad leader Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) are at odds when it comes to the future direction of the Democratic party, but in response to the early results in a highly contested Texas primary runoff, the progressive congresswoman may have thrown her entire caucus under the bus.
In trying to increase her leverage within the halls of Congress, Ocasio-Cortez embraced the opportunity to play influencer in races across the country as the failures she has brought to her district across Queens and Bronx, N.Y. haven’t been enough for her. As such, she sought out socialist allies in the Lone Star state campaigning for the likes of Jessica Cisneros.
The Texas March 1 primary that pitted incumbent Rep. Henry Cuellar against Cisneros to be the Democratic candidate for the 28th Congressional District led to an automatic runoff Tuesday and, while the results remain too close to call, AOC deemed the outcome an “utter failure of leadership.”
On the day of a mass shooting and weeks after news of Roe, Democratic Party leadership rallied for a pro-NRA, anti-choice incumbent under investigation in a close primary. Robocalls, fundraisers, all of it.
Accountability isn’t partisan. This was an utter failure of leadership.

Taking the politicization of the tragic shooting in Uvalde, TX even further than President Joe Biden, the New York lawmaker aligned the leaders of her own party with the same gun lobby that the left was maligning Republicans over. “On the day of a mass shooting and weeks after news of Roe, Democratic Party leadership rallied for a pro-NRA, anti-choice incumbent under investigation in a close primary. Robocalls, fundraisers, all of it,” she wrote.
“Accountability isn’t partisan,” she added. “This was an utter failure of leadership.”
The reference to robocalls comes after Pelosi “ran robocalls for Cuellar in the district earlier this week,” The Hill reported. House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) took it a step further and traveled to Cuellar’s district earlier in the month to campaign for the incumbent.
As for Cuellar, he is the only House Democrat with an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association.
If Ocasio-Cortez’s allegations are true, it comes as no surprise that when faced with the prospect of massive loses in the midterm elections the Democrats would seek to endorse a moderate in southern Texas where Republicans have steadily been gaining traction.
However, the congresswoman suggested this was on ongoing problem from within her party and that Cuellar, who had eked out a win against Cisneros in the 2020 primary as well, was just another member of their exclusive club.
“Congress should not be an incumbent protection racket and sadly it is treated as such by far too many. The fact is those who fail their communities deserve to lose. They don’t need rescuing from powerful leaders who state they fight for gun safety, the right to choose, and more,” her thread continued.

The Texas secretary of state’s website posted unofficial results Wednesday morning that indicate Cuellar, who has declared himself the victor, ahead by a margin of 177 votes with 50.2 percent to Cisneros’ 49.8 percent.
The votes are in, the margin will hold. We have won by 177 votes.

Considering the slim lead, there is still a potential for Cisneros to pullout a victory herself with mail-in votes postmarked by Tuesday and received before 5 p.m. Wednesday still eligible. As such, Cuellar told the Texas Tribune, “I know what it is to do a recount in an election. We have very good attorneys and if we need to, we will defend our election victory.”
Cuellar, the only pro-life Democrat in Congress, was referring to his initial election to the House in 2004 that required a recount to be decided.
Cisneros has understandably yet to concede with the margin so close and her message to supporters remained hopeful.
Thank you to every single voter that came out to support our campaign for #TX28.
This election is still too close to call, and we are still waiting for every ballot and eligible vote to be counted.

Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez plowed ahead with smearing her fellow Democrats for hamstringing their own agenda.
The last time leadership waded in to save him, he thanked them by obstructing the party’s signature legislation, paving the way for the child tax credit to collapse and imperiling millions while taking a victory lap for it.
We can’t afford to reward such acts. We can do better.
