Isaiah Lee, the man suspected of attacking comedian Dave Chappelle on stage earlier this month and who dodged charges over the alleged assault even though he was carrying a homemade shank, has been charged with attempting to stab to death his roommate last December.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón made the announcement on Thursday. He noted that Lee had been “charged with stabbing his roommate during a fight at a transitional housing apartment on December 2.”
“The publicity generated by the attack on Mr. Chappelle helped police solve this crime,” Gascón stated in a press release.
“The incident that occurred at the Hollywood Bowl was misdemeanor conduct and rightfully referred to the City Attorney’s Office. Based on the nature and severity of the December attack, Mr. Lee is now facing felony charges which my office will prosecute,” he said attempting to justify not going after the man following the attack on Chappelle.

Lee’s alleged victim identified him after the publicity around Chappelle’s assault exploded.
According to the press release, Lee has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court on June 2. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the case and considers Lee a suspect in it.
Lee was arrested on May 3rd after rushing the stage where Chappelle was performing at the Hollywood Bowl and tackling him. A number of people, including comedian Jamie Foxx, took Lee down before he could ostensibly hurt Chappelle.

Chappelle was not hurt in the incident and finished his show that was part of the “Netflix Is a Joke” comedy festival. He later convinced security to allow him to speak to the unstable man, asking him what prompted the attack.
Chappelle recounted that Lee told him a story about his grandmother from Brooklyn who had been forced out of her neighborhood by gentrification. He thought the attack would draw attention to that. Chappelle said Lee appeared to him to be mentally ill, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Lee originally faced a felony charge for assault with a deadly weapon. He had a “replica handgun” that had a folding knife attached to it in his backpack.

County prosecutors later decided that the incident was a misdemeanor case because the weapon was inside Lee’s bag when he attacked. Because of that fact, he was not charged with a felony.
Lee went on to plead not guilty to misdemeanor charges of battery in the attack, possessing a deadly weapon with intent to assault, and two counts related to interfering with a public event. He has been in jail since the attack occurred.
Following the attack, Gascón asserted he’s creating a “roundtable” made up of venues, security, and law enforcement to improve safety and security at future events according to ABC News.
