A planned attack left at least 10 dead in Buffalo, New York Saturday after a teen reportedly attempted to livestream an allegedly manifesto-driven, “racially motivated” shooting.
Authorities have identified 18-year-old Payton Gendron of Conklin, NY as the suspect in the shooting at the Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo. After traveling about 200 miles to his targeted location, the young man described as “heavily armed” opened fire in the parking lot around 2:30 in the afternoon before entering the grocery store to continue his assault.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia explained, of the four individuals struck outside the building, three were fatally wounded, according to the Associated Press. When the gunman entered the store he was met by security guard and former Buffalo police officer Aaron Salter, Jr., who fired upon the suspect in an attempt to stop him. Reports stated that Salter’s bullets were stopped by the suspects armor before return fire struck and killed Salter.
The suspect proceeded through the store firing upon individuals resulting in 10 fatalities and three others wounded. When police entered the store, they confronted the suspect who had put his own rifle to his neck in a threat of suicide before officers managed to get him to surrender. He was in possession of a hunting rifle, semiautomatic rifle, and a shotgun, according to NBC News, and at least one of the weapons was said to have had a racial slur emblazoned in white paint.
Stephen Belongia, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Buffalo field office, explained during a press conference, “We are investigating this incident as both a hate crime and a case of racially-motivated violent extremism.”

According to The Daily Mail, the suspect had a 180 page manifesto on a Google Drive that was accessible to the public before being removed by the company. Reportedly, that particular Tops grocery store was chosen because it had “the highest black percentage” close to the suspects home in upstate New York. It further recounted the suspects inspiration, including the white supremacist Brenton Tarrant who had live-streamed a shooting at a New Zealand mosque in 2019.
Other parts of the manifesto are said to contain the suspects feelings on the “great replacement theory” that suggests there is a concerted effort to reduce the percentage of white people in the population. However, there remains mixed reporting on any political associations that the suspect may house as some say he opposed Democrats but others report him as being “authoritarian left wing.”
The manifesto of the terrorist who killed people today contains the following:
– He did a chart of Jewish people and included me under “troll Jew.”
– Rejection of Christianity.
– An admission that he is is “authoritarian left wing.”
– Hybrid Nazi and “green nationalism.”

Regardless of his affiliation, Erie County Sheriff John Garcia was less couched in his conclusions than Belongia, saying: “This was pure evil. It was a straight-up racially motivated hate crime.”

Gendron was arraigned Saturday night and charged with first-degree murder charges while entering a not guilty plea.
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) weighed in on the shooting and reported closely monitoring the details and offered any assistance to local officials in need. She further noted that the crime was an “act of terrorism”
“And to see that sense of security shattered by an individual, a white supremacist who has engaged in an act of terrorism and will be prosecuted as such in a cold-hearted, cruel, calculating way, a military-style execution targeting people who simply want to buy groceries in a neighborhood store,” the governor said.
Hochul decried social media for the brief opportunity that the suspect was able to live-stream his content. However, in a statement to Fox News Digital, a spokesperson for the streaming service Twitch explained, “We are devastated to hear about the shooting that took place this afternoon in Buffalo, New York. Our hearts go out to the community impacted by this tragedy. Twitch as a zero-tolerance policy against violence of any kind and works swiftly to respond to all incidents. The user has been indefinitely suspended from our service, and we are taking all appropriate action, including monitoring for any accounts rebroadcasting this content.”
