‘Be careful’: CNN panel frets that Biden may have had a ‘basket of deplorables’ moment

CNN has speculated on Thursday morning that President Joe Biden’s smearing of the MAGA movement as extreme could possibly be his “basket of deplorables” moment.

In a public statement after the leak of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion that, if a majority of the court goes along with it, could overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, Biden appeared to be test-marketing a campaign slogan provided to him by his inner circle.

According to Biden, obviously without any evidence whatsoever, “this MAGA crowd is really the most extreme political organization that’s existed in American history.”

It’s also another classic case of projection by a Democrat who has presided, at least nominally, over an administration that seeks to implement a radical, far-left agenda in perhaps every aspect of the government operations, which includes an inflationary, massive federal spending spree.

According to CNN in the video clip embedded above, Biden is aiming “to sharpen his midterm messaging” as the campaign season draws closer.

While trying and failing to be clever, recall that Democrat Hillary Clinton, the globalist 2016 presidential loser, infamously branded many Trump fans (an America First constituency that included and still includes Dems and independents as well as Republicans) as a “basket of deplorables.”

“You could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. They’re racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it,” she said in September 2016.

Anchor Brianna Keilar, typically a liberal partisan who seemed more restrained in the segment than usual, asked CNN host Michael Smerconish if this was a “pivotal moment.”

Smerconish replied that Biden “is trying to put Donald Trump on the ballot…Republicans hold advantages with regard to the midterm election…now factor in inflation, factor in the border, factor in crime, and Republicans have a very strong hand in terms of the sort of the issues that motivate their base…I think President Biden is road-testing some themes to see if they get traction…”

It’s not ever clear if Democrat congressional candidates, however, want Biden, given his dismal approval ratings after a series of domestic and international disasters, to campaign with them.

In the meantime, having kingmaker Trump metaphorically on the ballot seems to be working, if Tuesday’s primary results are any indication.

Co-anchor Alex Marquardt then asked Smerconish if targeting the “MAGA crowd” could prompt a certain amount of fallout for Biden “kind of like when Hillary Clinton called this Trump base deplorables.”

This is an interesting question, especially since this is CNN, which under its former president Jeff Zucker devolved into a tedious, around-the-clock anti-Trump channel.

Parenthetically, perhaps this change in tone is a reflection of new owners Warner Bros. Discovery.

Smerconish seemed to agree that there could be blowback:

Alex, be careful. Right? Because I think that that backfired on [Clinton]. I think that she regretted it. I think it became a rallying cry. You remember there was merchandise, there was merch at the time. People were wearing T-shirts proudly proclaiming that they were part of the deplorables. So I think it’s a fine line, but I think we’re at a stage now, right, at this point in the spring, where it’s the president and his team seeing what resonates and what’s going to drive people. And the argument that he seems to have settled on yesterday is one of, if Roe versus Wade is overturned: Where else might this so-called movement lead?

The anchors then played a soundbite from Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WVa.) who insisted that inflation is the top issue in his state. “It’s hurting everybody, not just at the pump, but at the grocery store, at the drug store. Inflation, getting our financial house in order, is the most important thing we can do for this economy,” the lawmaker said.

Smerconish admitted that Manchin is probably correct that inflation, rather than abortion, is foremost on the minds of voters, although the latter is a passion issue for some. “Inflation is an equal-opportunity offender…in this 24-7 news cycle, it’s just impossible to tell those things that we’ll be discussing September, October, and the first few days of November,” he added.

The subtext of this segment appeared to be that the abortion-rights controversy won’t be a galvanizing voting issue across the broader electorate, although time will tell.
