CNN’s David Zurawik practically begged for government control of Twitter on Sunday morning due to the fact that the social media platform is in the midst of a handoff to the free speech absolutist Elon Musk.

In a discussion over Musk’s newfound ownership of one of the largest platforms on earth, Zurawik told the panel on Sunday’s episode of “Reliable Sources” that the Tesla creator’s stake in Twitter is “dangerous.”

“I think there’s a bigger problem that when we focus on the personalities of people like Elon Musk,” Zurawik complained. “There’s a bigger problem here about how we are going to control the channels of communication in this country.”

And the complication seemed to be that there’s a lack of bureaucratic policy that would limit otherwise protected First Amendment speech online.

“In 1927, we had The Radio Act, 1934 The Communications Act. Congress stepped in. We made rules. FCC wasn’t great but it’s still regulating the broadcast industry. You can’t use vulgar language, you can’t do all of these things with speech,” Zurawik noted.

Although he was evidently not concerned with billionaire Jeff Bezos plunking down the cash to own The Washinton Post, Zurawik took issue with Musk and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

“We gave over what amounts to our airwaves, or our internet waves, to Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, and we are in so much trouble because those guys believe in making money,” he said.

“We’ve already seen that with the 2016 election, and Zuckerberg, when he was taking rubles for ads from Russia,” Zurawik recalled. “Musk is the same.”

Then he made another plea for more government intervention to stop the likes of Musk from allowing humanity to have free thought online.

“No, I’m serious,” Zurawik insisted. “We don’t have people in Congress who can make regulations, that can make it work. I think we can look to the western countries in Europe for how they are trying to limit it but you need — you need controls on this. You need regulation.”

Controlling the media is so important to Zurawik that he claimed that it would be a virtual armageddon without strict rules for online speech.

“You cannot let these guys control discourse in this country or we are headed to hell. We are there. Trump opened the gates of hell and now they’re chasing us down,” he exclaimed.

His panicked tirade has some questioning if he could pull it together and act like an adult about Musk’s Twitter acquisition.

But others were smitten with his every word, eager for government oversight to implement a Ministry of Truth.  Oh, wait, that already happened.

But others were not so keen on handing over the reins of free speech online.
