Rumors have persistently circulated about Vladimir Putin’s health status, with the latest one that the Russian Federation president is allegedly scheduled for previously delayed cancer surgery, resulting in a spymaster taking charge of the government, at least temporarily.

This impactful bit of hearsay surfaced on Telegram, according to the Daily Mail:

“Vladimir Putin may be forced to give up control of the war in Ukraine for days as he is set for cancer surgery, a ‘Kremlin insider’ has claimed. The Russian dictator will reportedly nominate hardline Security Council head and ex-FSB chief Nikolai Patrushev to take control of the invasion while he is under the knife. Shadowy Patrushev, 70, a former KGB counterintelligence officer, is seen as a key architect of the war strategy so far – and the man who convinced Putin that Kyiv is awash with neo-Nazis,” the news outlet asserted.

“The extraordinary claims appeared on popular Telegram channel General SVR, which says its source is a well-placed figure in the Kremlin,” the news outlet added.

Under the order of succession in Russia’s constitution, low-profile Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin is the official who should take power if or when Putin is indisposed.

During the course of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, the fog of war has resulted in the spread of unconfirmed information of various kinds, so perhaps this latest allegation should be taken with a grain of salt.

Previous gossip, however, has suggested that Putin, 69, has Parkinson’s disease or thyroid cancer, among other alleged maladies.

With a macho reputation, ex-KGB officer Putin who has a black belt in Judo, has controlled Russia with an iron hand since 1999, including a stint himself as prime minister.

“There has been widespread speculation about Putin’s health since the start of his disastrous invasion of Ukraine in February, with some analysts suggesting his behavior has become increasingly erratic,” the Mirror in the U.K. claimed.

According to the Daily Mail, doctors originally wanted to operate on Putin in mid-April. “[Putin] has reportedly delayed surgery, which will now not take place before the Victory Day commemoration of Russia’s World War Two victory in Red Square on May 9.  The news comes amid speculation Putin will launch an all-out war across Ukraine and order mass mobilization of military-age men, a considerable political risk.”

“Frustrated army chiefs are urging the Russian president to drop the term ‘special operation’ used for the invasion and instead declare war, which would enable mass mobilization of Russians,” the London Telegraph similarly reported.

One expert on Russian security issues told the Telegraph that “The military [is] outraged that the blitz on Kyiv has failed. People in the army are seeking payback for failures of the past and they want to go further in Ukraine.”

The official line from the Kremlin in Moscow is that Putin is not suffering from any illnesses.

Putin reportedly does surround himself with food-tasters just in case he might get a stomach ache, or worse.
