Not since 2014 have voters signaled so clearly that they have had enough with the failures of the progressive agenda, and the politicians touting it, as they recently did in a new poll that showed Democrats are trending toward disaster in the midterm election.
The results of the recent poll conducted by NPR, in conjunction with PBS NewsHour and Marist, should have Democrats seeking entirely new messaging strategies if they haven’t already done so. When asked from April 19 to 26 to answer a series of questions pertaining to President Joe Biden’s performance and top issues facing the American public, Republicans are the clear winners.
In fact, the poll found if the election were held now, a generic Republican candidate would be favored to win over any Democrat candidate at 47 to 44 percent. While this falls into the margin of error denoted as 3.7 percent, the trend lines and breakdowns of the poll depict a losing message for the left come November.
New NPR/Marist poll is remarkable

Not only are Republicans leading by 13 percent with the Latino vote and by more than 20 percent for parents of young children as Senate GOP Policy Director Christy Lewis highlighted in her tweet, they also are recorded as having 20 percent of support among black voters which has continued to climb.
As NPR indicated, the last time Republicans led on the congressional ballot survey was ahead of the 2014 election when they had a five percentage point advantage over their Democrat opponents, leading them to win control of both the House and the Senate that year. While the current poll is not as clear-cut as that advantage, and there is still time before the midterms, the Democrats have only been losing favorability since November 2021.
Before inflation had reached a 40-year high, economic sanctions against Russia had led to the ruble doubling in value as the American economy shrank by 1.4 percent, and gas prices soared over $4/gal on average across the nation, Democrats were leading in a generic poll by five points. Now the gap among independents has grown to seven points, 45 to 38 percent, and at least 30 incumbent Democrats have announced they are not seeking reelection for their current seat in Congress.
When they still were polling in the lead, Mark Penn, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton, was joined by the former president of the New York City Council Andrew Stein in penning an op-ed cautioning the Democrats about the road they were heading down based on the Virginia and New Jersey election results.
“If Democrats remain on their current course and keep coddling and catering to progressives, they could lose as many as 50 seats and control of the House in the 2022 midterm elections,” they wrote at the time when Dems held a five-point advantage.
“[T]he flight from the Democrats was disproportionately in the suburbs, and the idea that these home-owning, child-rearing, taxpaying voters just want more progressive candidates is not a sustainable one,” they went on.
Despite that advice and faltering poll numbers, the progressive Democrats believe their agenda is exactly what voters are clamoring for as Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) recently argued. She contended that “Democrats are headed toward big losses in the midterms” if they failed to push through the progressive agenda, not in spite of it.

As Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) spokeswoman Christina Pushaw pointed out, the Democrats have a losing message with younger voters now. While she expressed surprise at this, considering the outcry over school curriculum and the fact that those under 45 are more likely to still be seeking financial stability, it makes perfect sense that this economy would benefit Republican politicians. It’s up to them to capitalize on that momentum and make the votes worthwhile.
