Now that Twitter is under new management following Elon Musk’s purchase of the tech giant, the big question on the minds of many is whether he will lift the ban on former President Donald J. Trump, an idea that has filled leftists with dread as well as some Republicans.
Musk has yet to address the matter of whether Trump’s access will be restored for the first time since a coordinated takedown by every major social media and tech company in the days after the so-called “insurrection” on January 6, 2021, but doing so would be simultaneously met with joy and outrage with the leftist meltdown having the potential to be nuclear in nature.
There are also those on the GOP side of the aisle who feel that Trump’s return to tweeting would be detrimental to their political objectives and some went on record with Politico, expressing their belief that it could actually hurt the party which is on the brink of what could possibly be a historic wipeout of Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections.
Following Musk’s sealing of the deal on his takeover bid, Politico Playbook dispatched reporters Rachel Bade and Eugene Daniels to hit the phones in order to get a pulse on Republican sentiment about the possibility that Trump could be given his account back and the answers were somewhat surprising.
According to Politico, “On Monday night, in a series of calls and texts with several top GOP insiders, every single one of them told us that they hoped the former president stays the hell away from Twitter, lest he sink their chances at flipping the House and Senate. Some of his allies even think that a return to his old Twitter habits could damage his own brand ahead of a possible third presidential bid in 2024.”
“If I’m a Democrat, I’d pray that Elon Musk puts Trump right back on Twitter,” an unnamed House GOP leadership aide was quoted. “I don’t think it costs Republicans the House, but it certainly will elevate Trump’s opinions — and is going to put Republican candidates and members back having to answer for that.”
“It’s enough to create headaches — and it’s enough to probably cost us a couple seats,” the aide added.
According to one GOP political strategist, “The lure of Twitter … may prove as irresistible for Trump as it is a potential return of a migraine headache for Republicans, who have not missed the tweets and the barrage of questions from the Trump-generated outrage du jour,” said Doug Heye. “There is no faster way for Trump to be front and center [in] the political conversation than rejoining Twitter, and he knows that.”
Trump expressed his position on a Twitter return to Fox News on Monday, insisting that he is focused on his own social media platform.
“I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” the former and perhaps future president said. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”
On Tuesday, he released a statement through his Save American PAC that he has used to get his message out since being banned, “Truth Social is number ONE in the Apple App Store,” Trump wrote in an indication that he is committed to the success of his new platform.

Prior to Musk’s bid being accepted, Fox Radio host Jimmy Failla gave his own reason why Trump shouldn’t be back on Twitter.

“The reason I am saying that is because with him off, we’re paying attention to real substance now, instead of them pretending the news cycle should be about which ‘Saturday Night Live’ actor he didn’t like this weekend. We are focusing on substance and that’s why Biden’s getting crushed,” he said.
“I think Biden would pay Elon to let Trump back on Twitter at this point,” said Failla.
“He has the world’s biggest microphone on Twitter,” an unnamed Republican who works on campaigns told Politico. “He could do a lot of good with it — or bad. It will make every GOP politician’s life more difficult.”
