Fox News contributor and former Marine Joey Jones sat down with Rick Simon, the Chairman of the Chicago Police Foundation, to discuss the city’s police department recruiting 20 Marines to bolster their ranks after so many cops have jumped ship in the liberal stronghold.

“Rising violence against cops is just one of several factors driving people away from becoming officers. The Chicago Police Department is facing its lowest staffing numbers in recent history. Now they’re recruiting the United States Marines to fix it with 20 already sent to join their ranks,” Jones stated.

“Well, you know, Marines are good at a lot of things, I guess they can fix a policing problem. Why go to the Marine Corps for this problem?” he asked Simon.

“Joey, if you’re looking for a group of well-trained individuals, physically fit, disciplined… know about weapons and self-defense, that’s a great start for a police recruit and where else would you go but the Marine Corps? And we were at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina a few weeks ago and the TRS people, the transition-ready people rolled out the red carpet and it was very successful and they’re headed to Camp Pendleton in a few weeks,” Simon noted.

“You know, let’s take a look at the actual problem here that’s causing you to go across the country to make this happen. Chicago Police staffing numbers March 30, 2022, 11,669; January 1, 2022, 11,983; January 1, 2021, 12,739… that’s a dramatic drop across a little more than a year and so you’re looking at Marines,” Jones pointed out.

“I got a question for you here, though. I understand as a Marine, especially when you train to deploy, you kind of train to know who your enemy is. But as a police officer, you kind of got to treat your enemy like your friend because you’re protecting them all. Is the training… is there a lapse in training, will these Marines be able to be trained in what is really a brand new job? It’s not just one seamless move from being a combat Marine to a police officer,” he charged.

“Chicago Police Academy training is second-to-none in training good police officers. That and the field training officers they work with, they get to know their neighborhoods, they know who they are serving and who they are protecting,” Simon asserted.

“I tell you what, it’s a fantastic idea. Some esprit de corps could help any police department across the country. I appreciate all you’re doing and thanks for reaching out to the Marines,” Jones concluded.

The inaugural event in March was held at Camp Lejeune where the Chicago Police Department sought to recruit “compassionate, qualified Marines” for the city’s police force. Twenty Marines made the cut after an entrance exam, drug test, fingerprinting, and answering a mandatory questionnaire. The hiring process was streamlined so recruits could complete the process in three days instead of several months.

“We are overwhelmed at the success of the inaugural recruitment trip,” Simon proclaimed, according to Fox 32. He led the delegation to Camp Lejeune. “Our Department deserves the best in class, and the Marines at Camp Lejeune exemplify the quality and characteristics of the finest Chicago Police Department officers.”

The next recruiting event for the Chicago Police Force will be held in late May at Camp Pendleton in California.

“Given the relationship between the Chicago Police Department and the USMC, this will be an ongoing program in Camp Lejeune and other Marine bases,” Deputy Chief Bulnes told the media outlet.

The Chicago Police force is looking to recruit 200 Marines for the department each year.

“These efforts are essential to building a more diverse police department reflective of the entire city while keeping and growing trust, strengthening our Department, and making our city safe,” Deputy Director Tom Ahern said to Fox 32.
