Meghan McCain’s promotional interview for her new book was awash with contradictions as she repeatedly referenced former President Donald Trump while claiming not to “give a f*ck what a Trump thinks,” and suggested her voice was a minority on the right, being “not as loud” as some despite being featured on national platforms.
“Bad Republican: A Memoir,” by McCain, available in audio format since October, is set to release in hardcopy on April 26. The former co-host of “The View” joined Newsweek to discuss her brand of “conservatism” and where she thinks the future of the Republican Party ought to be.
During the interview, McCain proudly declared of Trump, “I didn’t vote for him either time,” and proceeded to support positions that she never appeared to take. While decrying “full MAGA, red meat” policies she dubbed “alt right conservative,” she described her stance by saying, “I don’t want to say it’s completely in the minority, but it’s certainly not as loud. There’s this feeling where if you’re not a full populist and believe in the MAGA movement that you’re not welcome.”
However, she had been appearing on a daily network television show that she left with two years remaining on her contract because, she claimed, “I got really worn out from being a villain. I don’t want to do that anymore. I know who I am. I know what I believe. And I stand by everything that I believe. It’s more the screaming at each other, crossfire, we hate each other, we have to yell. It’s great for TV. And it’s great for ratings. It’s not great for me as a person.”
“I don’t want to have to defend things that are indefensible,” McCain explained. “The sins of the Republican Party and the sins of President Trump are not the sins of Meghan. I’m still conservative. You know, obviously, that’s never going to change.”
“What happens in the future going forward is anyone’s guess. Just simply because obviously if President Trump is the nominee [in 2024] I will not be voting for him or supporting him. And you know, I think that to got on TV, people want me to defend everything GOP…I just got really worn out about it,” she stated.
However, when asked about future campaigns for Sarah Palin who joined her father, the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) as the vice presidential candidate during his 2008 presidential bid, McCain also claimed, “I would like a sort of higher level of discussion or debate.”
“I’m a grown woman, I have a wonderful life. I’m not asking for a pity party,” and yet when she had the opportunity to reach across the aisle with intellectual discourse while on “The View” she argued she was filling a role.
She even claimed, “I’m just not – especially right now at this place in my life – I’m not like a ‘drink liberal tears, own the libs’ person. I don’t have that capacity to feel intensity about my beliefs and intensity about people that I think are doing the wrong thing.”

And if having said the complete opposite of that before weren’t contradictory enough, McCain went on to express some rather intense opinions about Trump, whom she claimed is obsessed with her father.
“I wasn’t surprised he took a shot at my dad, just because I have been told through different channels of people that know President Trump socially that he’s absolutely obsessed with my dad, like obsessed, like, thinks and talks about him frequently,” she expressed.
“And I just don’t believe that his legacy is going to be the same,” after recounting how people visit her father’s grave and leave tokens. “His legacy will be one of division and conflict and January 6. And, you know, I think that’s why he’s so obsessed with him. And you know, I no longer care really. It doesn’t mean I enjoy it.”
“But my family, and I feel like I can speak for all of my six siblings and my mother, in the sense like, we do not give a f*ck what a Trump thinks of my family. I never will,” she concluded.
