Republican South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott opined on the differing power of words versus deeds in an impactful speech Tuesday night, reaffirming personal responsibility as key no matter if detractors call him a “prop,” “token” or “the N-word.”
He declared, “what you call me is no match for the proof of my life.”
Scott had been invited to speak at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute as part of their ongoing speaker series entitled, “A Time For Choosing.” Named after former President Ronald Reagan’s famous 1964 speech in support of Senator Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign, the series, which included speakers like former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley and former secretary of state Mike Pompeo, aimed to address the meaning of Republicanism and how the party succeeded or failed over the years.
During his opportunity to speak Tuesday, Scott found himself concluding that his actions in life not only meant more than his words but more than the words of those who seek to defame him as well.

“Conservatism is my personal proof there is no ceiling in life,” he stated as he drew near the end. “I can go as high as my character, my education, and my perseverance will take me. I bear witness to that. I testify to that.”
“So, for those of you on the left, you can call me a prop. You can call me a token. You can call me the N-word. You can question my blackness. You can even call me Uncle Tim,” Scott suggested. “Just understand what you call me is no match for the proof of my life. Your words are no match for my evidence. Your pessimism is no match for the truth of my history.”
Proof of this was promptly provided on Twitter such as when one anonymous user who argued that “Republicans are fascists. Anyone who votes for any republican for any reason is thus also a fascist,” wrote, “You forgot Uncle Tom and yes we do call you all of those because guess what? You are all of those.”

Scott has repeatedly faced such attacks in his life as he addressed in the speech that highlighted his “faith in Christ Jesus” and the importance of education and financial literacy that were ingrained in him that apply to all Americans.
“We are the party of freedom, of strength, of personal responsibility and economic empowerment. We are the party of individual liberty, upward mobility, and the party that knows we are a nation of laws, not men,” he stated.
The South Carolina lawmaker is considered a probable running mate should former President Donald Trump decide to run again and, when asked about this in the past, he has said, “What I hope happens is that we rally around the principles that lead to our greatest success. I am not looking for a seat on a ticket at this point. I am, however, looking to be reelected in South Carolina.”
In concluding his speech, Scott urged others to reflect on the true values of what it means to be an American and to ignore the hateful rhetoric that belittles even those who are living proof of what can be achieved.
“So if it is a time for choosing, that is what I have chosen: The power, the life-changing power of freedom and hope and opportunity. Will you choose it with me? Will you join me as a messenger of hope, a missionary that the power of ideas can change our nation again?” he said.
“I will,” he declared. “God bless these United States of America.”
