MSNBC “MTP Daily” host Chuck Todd put former Biden advisor Symone Sanders on the spot Wednesday over the administration mishandling the end of mask mandates and actually got her to admit that Governor Ron DeSantis did a good job during the pandemic, noting that “Florida actually came out all right.”
Todd bluntly asked the former senior advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris if the Biden administration had been too timid in handling the end of the mask mandate due to a number of “setbacks” he’s had since being in office. He also pointed out that Democrats could be facing a “brutal midterm election cycle” this year.
The interview revolved around a federal judge nixing the mask mandate for public transportation. Todd seemed to believe that the White House should have fought harder against the ruling than they have, although the Department of Justice at the behest of the CDC is now appealing the decision. He asked Sanders why Biden isn’t being more vocal in defending the mandate.
“They don’t even want to get in front of this, and I can’t help but wonder is it because of the snakepit-ness of what happened when they declared independence too quick?” Todd wondered aloud.

Sanders stated that the White House is still enforcing a mask mandate and that the administration is complying with the CDC’s recommendations to the best of its ability.
“Is this overcorrecting?” Todd asked her.
“I don’t know it is overcorrecting. I think we’re all going through this together. You can’t fault the White House. They got news of the judicial ruling along with everyone else. And what they did was roll with the punches and I think rolled with the punches very well,” Sanders replied.
The conversation by the leftist media pundits naturally turned toward unjustly blaming former President Donald Trump over his response to COVID.
They also got a jab in over the federal judge who knocked down the mask mandate being a Trump appointee. Todd wanted to know how the White House didn’t see it coming because of that.
“It shouldn’t have been a surprise,” Todd asserted, “and yet, it did seem like they were caught a bit flatfooted.”
“I want to move from one politician who has been risk-averse to one who only likes risk and that is Ron DeSantis,” Todd said. “I look at what he’s doing in Florida. He calls a special session to jam through a congressional map that’s more favorable to Republicans in his state. And let’s make this special session about picking on Disney. He seems to bring on more risk. He seems to enjoy the risk.”
Todd went on to note that DeSantis “is unafraid to put his hand on the hot stove” when it comes to controversial issues such as those connected to the culture wars.

“Unafraid and one could argue that much has been — I was critical of Gov. DeSantis, still am, during the height of COVID, but if you really look at the numbers, Florida actually came out all right,” Sanders surprisingly stated.
“He’s got a story to tell,” Todd added.
“He has a story to tell,” Sanders agreed. “And the economy is strong.”
After taking a dig at DeSantis for rejecting math textbooks for proclaimed Critical Race Theory content, both Todd and Sanders tamped down their praise of DeSantis.

“And so it’s not all rosy,” Sanders claimed. “And so I think I would just caution us from heaping a little too much praise on Ron DeSantis.”
“And I don’t know if it’s praise ‘cause I think he’s taking on risk,” Todd disingenuously commented.
