The flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, the warship Moskva, reportedly sank to the depths and allegedly took with it a holy Christian relic, a piece of the “True Cross” on which Jesus Christ was said to have been crucified.

The ship was confirmed as being sunk on Thursday after an explosion took place on board, according to Russian state media outlet Tass.

The Russian Orthodox Church announced in February 2020 that the Christian relic was given to the then-commander of the Black Sea fleet Vice-Admiral Igor Osipov. It was rumored to be at the fleet’s headquarters and would be taken to the ship at the time.

The holy relic is said to be a fragment of wood that is only millimeters in size. It is allegedly embedded in a 19th-century metal cross. The assertion seems coincidental as this week is Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday in the Christian religion, marking Jesus Christ’s death by crucifixion and resurrection.

The warship had its own chapel according to Sergiy Khalyuta, archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Sevastopol District. The fragment was to be placed there at the behest of an anonymous collector.

“This relic used to belong to a Catholic church but was acquired by anonymous patrons of arts, and it was their will to send the relic to the [Black Sea] fleet,” the archpriest had stated in 2020.

Details of exactly when the relic was transferred appear to be very murky and it has not been verified that it was actually on board when it was sunk.

The Russians are still touchy about the ship being taken out according to Western officials.

The Ukrainians are claiming credit for the sinking of the ship stating it was hit by Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles from land. The Russians seem to be asserting that it was a fire on board that set off munitions prompting the evacuation of the 500-man crew. Details on exactly what happened are still unclear.

The Tass news agency reported, “As a result of a fire on the Moskva missile cruiser, ammunition detonated. The source of the blaze on the Moskva has been contained. The explosions of ammunition have stopped.”

Sky News reported that Odesa’s governor Maksim Marchenko wrote on Telegram, “It has been confirmed that the missile cruiser Moscow today went exactly where it was sent by our border guards on Snake Island! Neptune missiles guarding the Black Sea caused very serious damage to the Russian ship. Glory to Ukraine!”

According to CNN, the U.S. pretty much believes Ukraine’s version of the story.

This was the same ship that engaged Ukrainian border guards on Zmynyii, or Snake, Island, demanding they evacuate, “Put down your arms and surrender, or you will be bombed. Have you understood me? Do you copy?”

The response they received was unexpected as the guards told the ship’s crew to “go f*** yourself.” It went viral and initially it was reported the crew was killed. Later it was reportedly found they were taken as prisoners.

  1. Yes. The apostles believed an item, prayed for became holy. It’s not about the door of the cross. It’s about the blood Jesus shed for our forgiveness, and all we must Dinis call on His name. His gift is free for the asking. Nothing that can be bought or sold. It’s a free gift.

    1. God is on the side of anyone who calls on His name. The rain falls on the just and the unjust.

  2. If all the pieces of the “true cross” were ever assembled in one piece it would be the size of all the forests on earth.

    1. All crosses of convicts were thrown together in a deep hole. Jesus chose to die that we might live.

  3. Strange that a religious “leader” would allow a “priceless relic” to be placed in harm’s way.

  4. Well, years down the road an expedition can find the sunken ship and unearth this artifact. I am sure there is lots more that can be found on this ship as well

  5. Just a great way to whip up anti-Ukrainian sentiment. Puh-leeze…..so idiotic it’s embarrassing.

  6. We have no need for so-called holy relics.

What we need is to believe in His promise and Sacrifice.

    1. Spoken like a true believer, thank you. Not only his sacrifice, but thanks to Him, the gift of resurrection and eternal life. Where you spend that eternity is up to the individual, God has greater you free agency so you choose which path to follow.
      Amen to you post.

    2. Wow, that’s the truth! Relics are just that~ relics of days gone by, and probably not real anyway. We need the up-to-date Jesus in our hearts and in our lives. He is the only true answer to the chaos the world is in.

  7. The Russians are going to need more powerful relics if they are going to invade more countries. I suggest them getting in touch with the Church of the Holy Foreskin in the village of Calcata, Italy (30 miles to the north of Rome).

  8. I think it is better to lose a ship to an enemy missile than to have lost it to a stupid crew blowing themselves up.

  9. Anyone else getting honked off about the auto-play settings for the Tommy show?

The video player controls do not include a way to prevent auto-play.

  10. If you collect all the known pieces of the True Cross the weight would sink the ship.

If you had all the money spent by fools for pieces of the True Cross you could by Twitter.

  11. Of all the hairbrained stories that could have been spun about this, this is the last thing I would have ever imagined.

  12. I’ve got a bridge to sell to the highest bidder. Anyone interested? (Evidently it didn’t protect them from being sunk)
