Actress and liberal pundit Rosie O’Donnell slammed actor Will Smith for physically assaulting comedian Chris Rock live during the 94th annual Academy Awards Sunday, calling him a “narcissistic madman” while comparing the inaction of everyone in attendance to the “Trump years.”
Smith won Best Actor for his film “King Richard,” but whether he will receive his Oscar is now very much in doubt after the violent altercation on stage.
“We should never get to a place where we sit and watch a movie star hit someone on global television then, moments later, get a standing ovation while talking about love. #WillSmith #Oscars,” journalist Maria Shriver tweeted. “#WillSmith says he wants to be a vessel for love. Love is not violent. Love is not what was displayed on a global stage tonight. #Oscars.”
That prompted O’Donnell to step into the Hollywood fray, tweeting to her one million followers, “so true Maria – we watched him do it – then like the trump years – we don’t hold anyone accountable – shame on us – SHAME on will #Oscars2022.

O’Donnell’s response came after the Academy released a statement on Twitter following the incident, “The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
This prompted a response from O’Donnell.

The incident took place when Rock cracked a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, who has suffered from alopecia, a form of hair loss, for years. He kidded that he looked forward to seeing her in “GI Jane 2” because of her shaved head.
Smith proceeded to storm the stage and violently slapped Rock across the head. He then returned to his seat and yelled at the comedian, “Get my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!”
“Oh, wow! Wow! Will Smith just smacked the sh*t out of me,” Rock said as the attendees laughed. “Wow, dude. It was a GI Jane joke.”

One fan told O’Donnell, “I love u Rosie and Chris too but he was defending his wife who has an auto immune disorder that shouldn’t be joked on. However u feel personally about Will is something else.”
“Til tonight I loved will smith – he was wrong – he assaulted his friend on global tv – for making a bad joke – I truly doubt Chris knew it was alopecia – seriously doubt it,” O’Donnell responded.
Considering Pinkett Smith has been speaking about it since 2018, that would seem unlikely.
O’Donnell went on to retweet liberal actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner as well.
“Will Smith owes Chris Rock a huge apology. There is no excuse for what he did. He’s lucky Chris is not filing assault charges. The excuses he made tonight were bulls**t,” he tweeted.

Others supported Smith.
Jada’s “Girls Trip” costar Tiffany Haddish told People at the Governors Ball that she viewed it as “a black man standing up for his wife,” which “meant so much to me.”
“Maybe the world might not like how it went down, but for me it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives,” she added.
Nicki Minaj defended Smith, “I love Chris Rock. “… You just got to witness in real time what happens in a man’s soul when he looks over to the woman he loves & sees her holding back tears from a ‘little joke’ at her expense,” the rapper continued. “This is what any & every real man feels in that instant. while y’all seeing the joke he’s seeing her pain.”
