Cruz: Biden ‘about to become the number one funder of terrorism’ with commitment to Iran deal

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz has some harsh words for President Joe Biden.

“Biden is about to become, literally, the number 1 funder of terrorism in the world,” Cruz said in a tweet Thursday night.

The senator’s remarks were likely prompted by what the country has been learning about Biden’s proposed new deal with Iran. It seems particularly galling that, in the midst of the Ukrainian war and a flurry of sanctions against Russia, the deal has a number of carveouts for Rosatom, Russia’s leading energy company, to proceed with its projects in Iran. These include a $10 billion contract for Rosatom to build two new reactors at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Given all the tough talk at the White House about crushing Putin with punishing economic sanctions, these carveouts are raising more than a few eyebrows in Washington. The Biden administration has been eager to resurrect the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the infamous Obama-era Iran nuclear agreement that President Donald Trump scrapped in 2017.

There’s been a groundswell of support in recent weeks for sanctions against Russia, with the White House itself announcing a host of sweeping economic actions intended to cripple the Russian economy. So it comes as an unpleasant surprise to many that a large Russian corporation has managed to finagle such a lucrative exemption from the “comprehensive” sanctions imposed by the West.

Speaking in an interview with National Review, Cruz made no attempt to hide his displeasure with the arrangement.

“Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world,” he said. “They deliberately target American citizens for murder. And Joe Biden, for whatever reason, is eager to fund terrorists trying to murder Americans.”

On Wednesday, Sen. Cruz proposed a new piece of legislation designed to prevent the White House from circumventing Congressional sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program. The bill, SB 3857, is popular with Senate Republicans, and includes among its co-sponsors Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa, and both Sens. Rubio and Scott from Florida.

In a statement posted on his website, Cruz explained his opposition to Biden’s plan: “The Biden administration is dismantling sanctions and is aching to secure a new agreement with the Iranian regime that is even weaker than the original catastrophic Obama-Iran nuclear deal. The Biden administration is so committed to their deal that they are willing to make Iran a nuclear client for Putin, including work that amounts to a $10 billion subsidy for his war machine.”

Cruz also joined with 48 fellow Republican senators on Monday to issue a joint statement signaling their intention to obstruct any Iran deal that waives or weakens existing sanctions on the country’s nuclear program. Despite this, it seems the Biden administration is determined to go ahead with the deal at any cost—apparently in a desperate bid to reverse a long string of foreign policy disasters that have ensued since the president took office.
