Tom Brady’s post-retirement return to NFL spurs Twitter into wild conspiracy theories

Quarterback Tom Brady announced late Sunday that he would be coming out of retirement to play another NFL season, and some believe professional footballer Cristiano Ronaldo may have been the reason.

Brady, who spent 22 years in the NFL and won seven Super Bowls, tweeted out that he would be returning to the league for a third season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Including a picture of his team and his family, Brady said that he just isn’t ready to stand on the sidelines.

“These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stand. That time will come,” Brady wrote before adding, “Unfinished business LFG.”

While lot of people in the sports world seemed unsurprised and had even made predictions that this would happen –

– there was a significant number who questioned the timing of the announcement.

As it turns out, Brady was invited to attend a Manchester United game on Saturday by the Glazer family. The Glazers own the Premier League football club in addition to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Daily Mail reported.

At that particular game, Brady witnessed Cristiano Ronaldo get a hat-trick over Tottenham to win the game 3-2 while also making Ronaldo FIFA’s all-time leading goalscorer. After the game, Brady joined Ronaldo on the pitch to congratulate him on his achievement.

Ronaldo referred to himself and Brady as the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) for their respective sports and the meeting, along with Brady’s statement on “unfinished business,” have some pegging Ronaldo as the inspiration for the quarterback’s career decision.

Some suggested it had to do with a conversation between the two all-star athletes while others believed it had more to do with the record-setting display Ronaldo had put on.

One person even jested on football rivalries, saying that if Brady had gone to watch Lionel Messi play instead of Ronaldo then he would still be retired.

For his part, Brady’s last game prior to the announcement was the NFC Divisional Playoff against the Los Angeles Rams where the Rams defeated the Buccaneers 30-27 despite a 24 point 3rd quarter effort. The media jumped on news of Brady’s retirement soon after, but before he could make an official statement days later.

Many doubted whether the speculation would hold true or not considering Brady had $15 million of his signing bonus on the line. However, he did go on to sever ties with the sport, if only temporarily, on February 1.

In addition to the perspective on what may have caused Brady to change his mind, there were those who weighed for and against the decision. Sports radio host Mike Francesa joked on the “fluid” nature of retirement having made a similar move in his career.

The New York Jets, who had celebrated the retirement, expressed their disappointment.

However, Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey was filled with relief that he would no longer be a player who Brady had thrown his last touchdown pass over.
