Ottawa’s mayor declared a state of emergency on Sunday as thousands descended on the Canadian city with truckers in the Freedom Convoy to protest vaccine mandates, proclaiming that the situation was “completely out of control.”

“The situation at this point is completely out of control,” Mayor Jim Watson stated on Sunday. “The individuals with the protest are calling the shots. They have far more people than we have police officers.”

“Declaring a state of emergency reflects the serious danger and threat to the safety and security of residents posed by the ongoing demonstrations and highlights the need for support from other jurisdictions and levels of government,” the mayor declared in a statement.

“It should have ended days ago, there’s no question about that,” he continued. “The nerves of the residents, particularly in the downtown core, are frayed beyond belief. They are suffering, and the protesters do not seem to have any understanding of how insensitive they are, blaring horns and sirens and fireworks, and turning it into a party. … Bringing in bouncy castles and saunas and hot tubs is the height of irresponsibility.”

“Clearly, we are outnumbered and we are losing this battle right now,” he said. “This has to be reversed; we have to get our city back.”

“The state of emergency gives our staff and our city a few extra tools to speed up things like procurement,” he told the CBC News Network on Sunday.

“We’re in the midst of a serious emergency, the most serious emergency our city has ever faced, and we need to cut the red tape to get these supplies available to our police officers and to our public works staff,” Watson remarked.

The announcement came as the city’s Police Services Board Chairwoman Diane Deans claimed that the situation had spiraled into “a nationwide insurrection” with protests spreading from Ottawa to Toronto and Quebec over the weekend.

During an emergency meeting of the Ottawa Police Services Board that took place on Saturday, Chief Peter Sloly adamantly stated, “We need an additional surge of resources,” after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ruled out deploying the military over the protests.

On Saturday, the Daily Mail reported that approximately 7,000 protesters and 1,000 vehicles stormed the streets of Ottawa, the nation’s capital. Police have charged four people with hate crimes and are looking into threats against public figures in collaboration with the FBI.

Around 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Ottawa Police Department declared that anyone providing fuel and materials supporting the truckers could be arrested.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) commented on Fox News Sunday that the “government doesn’t have the right to force you to comply to their arbitrary mandates.”

He also laid into GoFundMe after they at first said they would be donating the nearly $10 million raised for the truckers to charities and then backtracked saying the money would be refunded to donors. Cruz called it “theft” and accused them of “deceptive trade practices.”

Cruz got into a Twitter fight with Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart over the weekend.

“As the Mayor of a city with an over 95 percent vaccination rate, my message to the convoy is this: Vancouver doesn’t want you here. Make your point and then go home,” Stewart tweeted at protesters and the Freedom Convoy.

“Do your shelves have gasoline? I know some really cold truckers who need it….,” Cruz responded.

“Can someone tell Ted Cruz our store shelves are fine thanks to the 90% of Canadian truckers who are fully vaccinated,” Kennedy shot back on Sunday. “Too busy high-fiving all the awesome folks in Vancouver that are helping push back against the #hateconvoy.”

Cruz demanded on Sunday that the Federal Trade Commission open an investigation into GoFundMe for their handling of the donations.

“Listen, it is theft on the part of GoFundMe. Let me say — the Canadian truckers are heroes. They are patriots marching for your freedom and for my freedom,” Cruz told Fox host Maria Bartiromo. “Those truck drivers that – God bless them – they’re defending Canada, but they are defending America as well.'”

“That is courage on display, that the government doesn’t have the right to force you to comply to their arbitrary mandates. And they’re standing up for freedom, and of course, big government hates it and is trying to crush them,” he asserted.

“The corporate media hates it and is trying to silence them, and big tech – look at what GoFundMe did, people gave $10 million to support the Freedom Convoy because they were so proud of the courage of these truck drivers, and the thieves in Silicon Valley decided ‘We don’t like your politics, so A, We will take your money and then B, we’re going to give it to people we like,'” Cruz added.

“Listen, if anyone else did that, that is called theft. And so today I sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission asking that the FTC open an investigation into GoFundMe, into whether they have committed deceptive trade practices because when people gave money, they gave money under the promise it would go to the Freedom Convoy, not to whatever left-wing political ideology GoFundMe and other Silicon Valley companies support,” he continued. “They are deceiving consumers and it is wrong.”
