Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald brought to light the irony behind former President Barack Obama reportedly looking to end his relationship with Spotify when his contract ends due to podcaster Joe Rogan’s supposed “misinformation” and off-color past remarks, which is contrary to the former president’s own well placed advice denouncing “woke” activism.

Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are reportedly seeking to partner with another company when their 3-year contract with Spotify that was signed in June 2019 ends according to a report by Business Insider.

But the couple’s desire to jump ship is particularly surprising when you consider the President’s own previous statements on cancel culture. To that end, Greenwald posted a rather pithy 2019 speech given at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago where Obama clearly denounces  “woke” activism where he noted that “if all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not going to get that far.”

“People who do really good stuff, have flaws,” Obama said acknowledging human nature and the fact that no one is perfect. “People who you are fighting, may love their kids, and share certain things with you.”

The two-term former president noted the danger he saw, particularly on college campuses noting, “There is this sense of ‘the way of me making change is to be as judgemental as possible about other people.’ If I tweet or hashtag about how you didn’t do something right, or use the wrong verb, then I can sit back and feel pretty good about myself. Because, man, you see how ‘woke’ I was – I called you out.”

“That’s not activism,” Obama said. “That’s not bringing about change. If all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not going to get that far. That’s easy to do.”

While Obama is not following his own advice – after all, he himself noted that everyone is flawed – Greenwald dissected the rush to vilify Rogan and his podcast where Rogan has dared to share information contrary to the mainstream narrative.

According to Greenwald,  the real goal is to impact Rogan’s ability to sign with a major platform, inhibiting growth, therefore setting him up as an example for others so they will self sensor in the future.

Many people on social media agreed with Greenwald, likening the cancel culture to being “hit over the head with a baton.”

Not everyone was swayed by Greenwald’s assessment of the situation with Rogan, believing that it didn’t matter if Spotify ousted him.

***Warning: Language***

But Greenwald pointed out that their acceptance of censorship was part of the game government’s played to coerce private companies to do their bidding to silence dissent.
