Democrats and their media allies have found themselves in a cognitive dissonance quandary about election integrity, journalist Mollie Hemingway has suggested.
“Dems are in a pickle. They REGULARLY question elections, but have been asserting 2020–which we all know was unlike any in our history–is beyond question. Recent tangled rhetoric is an attempt to reclaim their long-held stance of doubting GOP election wins,” she wrote on Twitter.
Hemingway has the receipts, in that she is the author of a best seller called Rigged: How the Media, Big Tech, and the Democrats Seized Our Elections.
As part of a damage-control effort, White House press secretary Jen Psaki has been making the TV rounds, including on ‘The View,” in attempt, among other things, to clarify President Biden’s comments at his press conference last week that the 2022 elections may not be “legitimate” unless Congress passed so-called voting rights measures.
With Democrats Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin joining all the Senate Republicans in keeping the filibuster threshold as is, the legislation is stalled, perhaps permanently. If enacted, the Dems’ proposal would eliminate voter ID across the country and allow ballot harvesting everywhere as well as universal mail-in balloting.
‘Clean up on aisle Democracy!’ Psaki torched for trying to clarify what Biden REALLY meant on midterms https://t.co/y1V7q0RpkZ

Hemingway was reacting to Never Trumper Ana Navarro, who, in teeing it up for Psaki on “The View,” claimed, without evidence, that some states are making it difficult to vote, particularly by mail. In so doing, Navarro played the legitimacy card and the alleged Big Lie.
The president has suggested “that people are trying to make it harder for them vote,” Psaki claimed in agreement about “nefarious things.” She also told Navarro that a mom with three kids encounters obstacles in casting a ballot without drop boxes being everywhere or without expanded early voting.
“So what the president was trying to convey is that we need to be clear eyed, open-eyed, educated, about what our rights are,” added the White House spokesperson known for lamenting the tragedy of the delayed treadmill or telling frustrated liberal voters to take a kickboxing class or have a margarita.
“But [Biden] wasn’t trying to predict that the elections will be illegitimate,” Psaki asserted. What Donald Trump is alleging about 2020 is different, she insinuated.
Psaki also said that Justice Department has doubled the funding for voter protection.

The corporate media maintains that no “widespread” fraud occurred in election 2020 and frowns upon any further substantive discussion of it.
As Hemingway alluded to, Democrats consider any questioning of the 2020 presidential outcome as a threat to democracy and ex-President Trump’s Big Lie, but they are totally okay with preemptively and aggressively questioning the 2022 vote or, as history has shown, the 2016 victory by Trump.
The Bush v. Gore 2000 election was also aggressively contested.
Other similar examples, among many: Dems against gerrymandering of congressional districts unless the boundaries favor them, and they condemn “dark money” in politics except when they are receiving the checks.
With the GOP projected, as things stand now, to control Congress after the upcoming election, it appeared that the political/media establishment began rolling out the illegitimacy narrative some months ago, and it has obviously continued.
Hemingway recently made these observations at The Federalist, where she is a senior editor:
…The response of the old guard of the Republican Party this week has been to wholeheartedly endorse the media narrative that the 2020 election had no significant problems, while also opposing Biden’s plan to run elections. It’s a politically insane approach.
The 2020 election was riddled with problems. Voters know this. Republican voters know this very well. Time Magazine described what happened with the election as “a well-funded cabal of powerful people, ranging across industries and ideologies, working together behind the scenes to influence perceptions, change rules and laws, steer media coverage and control the flow of information…
The rigging of the election included changes to hundreds of laws and processes in the months prior to election day, flooding the system with tens of millions of mail-in ballots even as scrutiny of those ballots was decreased…
Stunning: TIME admits well-funded cabal of influencers worked behind-the-scenes to ‘save’ 2020 election https://t.co/WpYXQUfH0K

Various Twitter users who seem to be on the same wavelength as Hemingway are weighing in on Navarro-Psaki exchange:
Their stance is perfectly consistent: any election they win is legitimate, any they lose is illegitimate.

As there were no major changes since 2020; to question 2022 means 2020 was not legitimate. Is that where they want to take this claim?

This has always confused me. If we need to reform the ’20 rules to ensure the integrity of ’22, but w/o reform the ’20 rules apply, and that leads to issues with ’22, doesn’t that mean issues with the ’20 elections?
— Zymurgyst (@Zymurgyst) January 23, 2022
It is amazing that the US President who in 2016 was elected by Russian interference & Macedonian hackers etc then also presided in 2020 over the cleanest election in US history …. Am I doing this right?
— Gray Connolly (@GrayConnolly) January 22, 2022
So if the current state is not fair does she agree that the 2020 election was illegitimate?
— bobtheelderone (@bobtheelder) January 23, 2022
Someone should tell them that in Texas we have two weeks of early in person voting. And if that isn’t enough for some people they can apply for a mail-in ballot.
It’s easier to vote in Texas than it is to vote in Biden’s Delaware.

It’s the same old same old. Democrats always accuse Republicans of what they are actually doing. Look for more Democrat Tom foolery with election ballots.
— TheWolfie (@dracarr) January 23, 2022
So to be clear, Joe Biden told us the midterm elections will most likely be illegitimate, but the 2020 elections were the most secure ever? Hmmm that’s weird
— Border Wall (@rockyfork) January 23, 2022
No pickle. They lie, pivot, lie with ease. MSM just follows the party line and acts like past statements and stances pay Dems never happened.
— Bunyinz (@Patriot_Village) January 22, 2022
Why not you know…. plan ahead? Dad votes B4 work, Mom votes after? Or are we talking about something else here?
