A man in Maine who evidently suffered a horrific workplace accident was rescued by two quick-thinking public works employees on Friday when they saw him stumbling down the street with his severed arm like something out of a horror movie.
The man’s arm was reportedly cut off at the shoulder and he was losing a massive amount of blood. Police traced his steps back to the AK Market but are still trying to figure out what happened. The crew applied tourniquets to the man at around 9 a.m. in the morning which no doubt saved him from bleeding to death the Sun Journal reported. They then called police and rescue crews who arrived shortly thereafter.
“That probably saved his life,” Lewiston police Lt. Derek St. Laurent grimly remarked.
Since it might have been a workplace-related accident involving a band saw, police called for assistance from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and an investigation was launched immediately. Police were still trying to establish who owns the business Friday afternoon as well as the identity of the young man.

The injured young man was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and is expected to survive thanks to the two workers who were sanding a sidewalk at the time of the incident. The workers are Cam Bernard and Bob Olsen, who are both arborists trained in the use of tourniquets. It is unclear whether surgeons were able to re-attach the man’s arm.
The two workers who helped the man were at the right place at the right time according to Mary Ann Brenchick, who is the director of Lewiston Public Works.
“It had to be divine intervention,” she stated, “because two of my best guys just happened to be there sanding sidewalks. It couldn’t have been better guys for this kind of situation. I really hope it made a difference for that guy.”
