President Joe Biden opened the door to not running for the presidency in 2024 on Wednesday during an interview with ABC News anchor David Muir, responding that it will depend on his health while making the subtle threat that he would be tempted to if former President Trump runs.

“Yes, but look, I’m a great respecter of fate,” Biden hedged concerning the promise he made in 2020 that he would serve eight years if elected. “Fate has intervened in my life many, many times. If I’m in the health I’m in now — if I’m in good health — then, in fact, I would run again.”

There have been strong indicators even before Biden entered office that he was in poor health and, since then, those suspicions have only grown among the American public. Most have already come to the conclusion he will not run for a second term and the assertion that he will do so if Trump enters the race is one that holds no weight. The President is now 79 years old and is not only gaffe-prone but seems to constantly forget what he is saying and where he is. He suffers from an ongoing cough as well and often walks as if he is in some form of increasing pain.

Even putting his health aside, Biden’s poll numbers continue to plummet making him a poor prospect for reelection despite what he or Democrats claim. Making the promise of running for reelection contingent on his health allows Democrats eyeing a bid for the presidency to now begin prepping for 2024. Many believe the statement from the president appears calculated and aimed at that eventuality.

Just last week, White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre assured the media at a press conference that Biden has every intention of running for reelection in 2024 with Vice President Kamala Harris on the ticket. Now, this subtle shift in tone is sure to be a green light to potential Democrat candidates.

“Well, I mean, I can’t speak to a conversation that the Vice President and the President have,” Jean-Pierre remarked. “I could only say what and reiterate what Jen [Psaki] has said, and what the President has said himself, that he is planning to run for reelection in 2024. I don’t have any more to add.”

When Muir quizzed Biden on the specter of Trump running in 2024, Biden became a bit more animated but it was weak bravado at best.

“You’re trying to tempt me now?” Biden smirked. “Sure. Why would I not run against Donald Trump if he were the nominee? That would increase the prospect of running.”

During that same interview, Biden addressed his administration’s response to the Omicron variant surge. He stopped short of admitting they were unprepared and had failed on that front, but he did say he regretted not ordering more kits sooner.

“Three days before Christmas, if you look out across the country, you see it everywhere, these long lines, people waiting for hours outside in the cold, just to get tested, to be reassured before they spend time with their family,” Muir stated. “If you go to the pharmacy, we hear this over and over again, empty shelves, no test kits. Is that a failure?”

“Nothing’s been good enough,” Biden conceded. “But look, look where we are. When last Christmas, we were in a situation where we had significantly fewer vaccinated — people vaccinated, emergency rooms were filled. You had serious backups in hospitals that were causing great difficulties.”

“I wish I had thought about ordering a half a billion… two months ago,” he confessed.

“I don’t think it’s a failure,” Biden replied. “I think it’s — you could argue that we should have known a year ago, six months ago, two months ago, a month ago.”

The health issue caught fire on social media:
