Two pundits on a Fox News panel clashed on a Tuesday evening broadcast when the subject of presidential authoritarianism came up.

“Get off Trump,” Bill Bennett, the U.S. education secretary under President Ronald Reagan, told liberal counterpart and Biden apologist Charles Lane of The Washington Post. “Whatever one thinks of Trump, he wasn’t destroying the country in the way that this administration is.”

“Special Report” host Bret Baier teed up the segment by playing an embarrassing soundbite of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm lacking knowledge about U.S. daily oil consumption in the context of the administration’s decision to release 50 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Reacting to the clip, Bennett described the situation under the Democrats as “kind of hopeless and hapless.”

“Look, this will last maybe two, two and a half, days,” he continued. “OPEC can lower its production so prices can remain the same. In any case, it’s a very, very temporary thing.”

The intimation from Bennett then perhaps seemed to revolve around that age-old question: Who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?

“There’s a problem with the Biden administration right now that’s getting acute,” he explained, “and that is keep saying things are getting better, things are okay, ‘you think things are bad, don’t believe your own eyes. Don’t believe what you see at the gas pump, believe me.’ This is what happens in authoritarian countries. And it’s a very dangerous road, a very dangerous road to take.”

“Well, I think that we did have a president in the previous four years who did quite often what Bill just said, and that was, as he says, a symptom of authoritarianism,” Charles Lane chimed in.

“Get off Trump,” Bennett interjected.

A “head-shaking” Lane then claimed that the drastic spike in gas prices wasn’t the incumbent president’s fault “because even if he ended the gas — the oil leases and so on, that had a trivial marginal effect. Probably the worst thing for Biden is to create the implication that he does have some control over the price of gasoline by taking this measure which probably in the end will demonstrate he doesn’t have any control over it.”

“The instinct here to go back to Trump is just so telling to me,” Bennett responded. “You know, [Biden] is creating a disaster, and he is reversing all the policies of Trump. Whatever one thinks of Trump, he wasn’t destroying the country in the way that this administration is. Whether you’re talking about the border, whether you’re talking about China, whether you’re talking about the price of oil, I mean, it’s really quite extraordinary what’s going on…”

“Bill, you said this is authoritarianism, and the last president — the last president inspired a mob, a mob, to attack the Capitol, Bill,” Lane insisted during some crosstalk.

“There we go. We’ll have our January 6th. I know that you guys are putting a lot into that, January 6th,” Bennett responded.

“Kind of important,” Lane asserted.

“But when you look at the policies of the previous administration compared to these policies, the country was in a lot better shape, a lot better shape,” Bennett concluded in reflecting what most of America is thinking, if polling data about the deeply unpopular Biden-Harris administration is accurate.
