Bill Maher, the host of “Real Time” on HBO, challenged Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to appear on his show next year in his end-of-the-season monologue where he called out AOC and other Democrats for their exclusionary politics.
Maher put on his “coaching hat” to try to point Democrats in the “right direction” after their disastrous, but predictable defeats in November elections this year that could serve as a harbinger of what’s to come in the 2022 midterms.
The HBO host pointed to Democrat commentator and politico, James Carville’s post-mortem on the party’s losses this year. Carville blamed Democrats’ “stupid wokeness,” and, in turn, triggered some of the biggest “woke” offenders.
Democrat darling and icon for the “woke” movement, Ocasio-Cortez rejected Carville’s analysis. The congresswoman fired back, saying that the term is “almost exclusively used by older people these days … so that should tell you all you need to know.”
“What?!” Maher reacted, “This is a term folks like you brought out very recently, had been proudly displaying it every march since. Just last year, The Guardian declared ‘woke’ the ‘word of our era.’ I guess they didn’t get the memo from the Mean Girls Club.”
“What a great strategy, never missing an opportunity to remind voters how lame and clueless and hopelessly cool they are, especially since those are the ones who actually vote,” Maher chided Ocasio-Cortez. “But OK, fine. What word would you like us to use for the plainly insane excesses of the left that are not liberalism but something completely different? Because you can’t have that word ‘liberal’ from us and think it should cover things like canceling Lincoln. And teaching third-graders they’re oppressors. That’s all your new-think.”
The HBO host noted that there is a “more pertinent question” surrounding the term, asking why it so quickly went from a rallying cry to a pejorative.
“If the word only made you think of rational, deserved causes like teaching a less whitewashed version of American history, AOC would still want to own it. But it’s a joke because it makes you think of people who wake up offended and take orders from Twitter. And their oversensitivity has grown tiresome,” Maher explained.
The HBO host said that he would love to have AOC on the show in the future because “there’s a lot to admire there.” Maher’s not holding his breath, however, noting that Democrats don’t go anywhere they’re not already “pre-adored.”
“That’s my last bit of advice to them. Go where the ‘amen corner’ isn’t. Do Fox News. Be brave. Come here. Go everywhere. Winning is about expanding the electorate,” Maher said, offering his two cents.
The host of the popular “Real Time” show has desperately been trying to reach Democrats who appear to have completely lost their senses on issues that matter to working Americans who vote.
Recently, he called out Democrats for their embrace of Critical Race Theory in the classroom and their deeming anyone against it racist.
“I find that [parents are racist is] a disingenuous argument. Because I don’t think that is what people are objecting to, I don’t think most people, now, of course, there are some places in this country where they will and some people who will, but they’re not objecting to black history being taught. There are other things going on in the schools,” Maher stated, “like separating children by race and describing them as either oppressed or oppressor. I mean, there are children coming home who feel traumatized by this. That’s what’s — that’s what parents are objecting to.”
Only time will tell, but it seems that Democrats’ “wokeness”– or whatever AOC wants to call it– will be their folly come 2022.
