Time’s Up, a national feminist group that ostensibly fights sexual harassment in the workplace, is undergoing a “major reset” after it was revealed its top officers advised disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo following an ex-staffer accusing him of sexual misconduct.
“This is a needed reset, not a retreat,” claimed Board Chair Gabrielle Sulzberger in a statement. The shake-up was first reported by The Washington Post.
“TIME’S UP stands for accountability and systematic change in the workplace. It is incumbent on us to learn from these findings, and focus on building an organization that powerfully serves women of all kinds and ends the impunity of sexual harassment and assault in the workplace,” she added.
The organization is brutally cleaning house. But instead of getting rid of the leadership, the group is firing nearly all of its 25-member staff and starting over from scratch. The board of directors made the announcement on Friday.
The Associated Press reported that some of the issues addressed included, “Confusion over purpose and mission. Lack of focus on long-term goals. Ineffective communication internally and externally. Lack of accountability for top officials, especially the CEO. Too politically partisan, and too aligned with Hollywood.”
“We’re going down to the studs,” board member Ashley Judd stated in an interview. “We’re going to rebuild and reset and come back in a way that honors our mandate, incorporates the voices of our critics, learns from our findings … and holds ourselves accountable but also lives up to our potential.”
Last August, CEO Tina Tchen and chairwoman Roberta Kaplan both resigned after they were caught giving advice to Cuomo’s team following former staffer Lindsey Boylan accusing the Luv Gov of sexual harassment in December 2020.
Text messages revealed that Tchen ordered her colleagues to “stand down” and not release a public statement in support of Boylan. Those texts occurred after two organizational members spoke to top Cuomo aide Melissa DeRosa.
DeRosa reportedly told investigators that Kaplan had reviewed a draft letter that was meant to malign Boylan.
Cuomo would eventually be accused of sexually harassing 11 women, including former and current staff members and a state trooper assigned to his security detail. The disgraced politico resigned in August after being threatened with impeachment.
When it came to light that Time’s Up had been assisting and advising Cuomo, there was an embarrassing backlash against the organization. The group was originally founded by Hollywood mover and shakers following the Harvey Weinstein sex abuse scandal.
The group announced a “major reset” and reformation “from the ground up” following a review of its operations by an independent consultant.
Interim President and CEO Monifa Bandele will step down while the majority of the staff will be terminated. They will receive severance through March 1, 2022. The statement from Time’s Up says current programmatic operations will cease at the beginning of 2022.
“We persevere. We will not lose the ground gained for women’s equality and safety over these last several years,” Bandele declared.
“Our movement and the stakes for our entire society and future generations are so much bigger than one organization or title. We will continue to make significant contributions, both through work led by TIME’S UP and beyond,” she continued.
Staffers fumed over the news which The Washington Post seemed to have before many of them did.
“They said on the call, ‘The Washington Post is releasing a piece right now,’” said Stacey Ferguson, Time’s Up’s digital director, according to The Daily Beast. “Some staff members were like, ‘Oh my god, my mom is going to read about it before I can tell her.’”
“To paraphrase what a colleague shared on the call: For an organization that’s supposed to be advocating for fair and dignified workplaces, this feels like the opposite of that,” Ferguson noted.
Staffers asserted they were confused why this “reset” required all of the on-the-ground staff to be terminated, while three of the organization’s highest-ranking members stayed on in order to “rebuild.” They called it a “slap in the face.”
“Most of us weren’t in the leadership team when the Cuomo stuff happened, yet we’re the ones being punished for past actions of the organization,” asserted one employee.
“Yet again, Time’s Up is putting the interests of the organization over its own staff members,” she declared. “We’ve obviously become collateral damage in all of this.”
One staffer reported that Judd began to cry when she announced the lay-offs, saying she was “broken-hearted” over the news.
“Mind you, she’s already put out a statement [to the Washington Post] with information that staff didn’t have access to,” the staffer claimed. “So keep your f**king crocodile tears.”
