Police in Temple, TX say they intend to press charges on a customer who was filmed throwing soup in the face of a restaurant employee.

Restaurant manager Jannelle Broland, 24, was doused with menudo after an irate customer complained of her soup being too hot, surveillance footage from inside the Mexican restaurant Sol de Jalisco shows.

“We do not condone this type of behavior and hold our citizens to the highest standard,” Temple Police Deputy Chief Allen Teston told KCENTV. “If a citizen believes they have received poor service we advise them to remain civil until the problem is resolved.”

Broland said the female customer – whose male companion stood bravely by her side – was inconsolable, claiming the soup was so hot that the plastic from the to-go container’s lid had melted into the contents. Soon thereafter, the woman flung the entire contents of the container at Broland, hitting her directly in the face with what appeared to be at least a quart of the Mexican hangover cure.

“The spices from it are what hit me the most,” she said, according to the outlet. “I remember feeling the warmth of the soup, but my eyes burned so bad. My nose was burning. It kind of took my breath away for a second because just the burning, I was really in shock from it all.”

Broland recounted in a TikTok video that the woman had called the restaurant earlier to complain about the soup, chastising her over the phone.

She offered restitution to the woman when she arrived back at the restaurant carrying the soup in question.

“Every time I would mention a refund or a free replacement meal, she would just cut me off and kept saying ‘This is f—— ridiculous’ or ‘Look at this s—,'” Broland told DailyMail.com. “She did not seem to want anything, just to berate me.”

After the encounter, Broland said she “felt like she had been pepper-sprayed,” but was not seriously injured. Customers in the restaurant sprang into action.

“By the time I got outside, there were already people recording their faces and their license plate,” said Broland.

“I was in shock, I ran to the bathroom. I was just crying and this really nice woman was wiping me off with paper towels and wiping my face and my hair and was so, so kind. One of my coworkers took off her work shirt, put on her hoodie and gave me her work shirt.”

“I just wanted to let you know that I was not alone in that moment,” said Broland in her TikTok video.

The restaurant manager said she has been overwhelmed by the show of sympathy from her community and had no idea her TikTok video would have such a widespread reaction.

“I really only expected this to be locally viral,” she told the Mail. “I have a lot of friends in the restaurant industry, so I knew they would relate to this, or at least understand my frustration. I had no idea I would be contacted by news outlets and have the footage shared thousands of times.”

The TikTok video has been viewed more than 4.9 million times as of Wednesday.
