San Fran to require proof 5 to 11-yr-olds are vaccinated for access to certain public places

San Francisco, undeterred by the apparent national rejection of woke politics on Tuesday, has lined up a new progressive policy: making children aged 5 to 11 years old show proof of vaccination to enter various buildings.

San Francisco Health Officer Dr. Susan Philip made the announcement during an interview on YouTube with SFGovTV. Philips acknowledged that there had been questions about children and vaccine mandates:

“People have asked me … what about the local San Francisco health orders that require vaccination to go into a restaurant or to go to a Warriors game, when is that going to apply to children 5 to 11?”

Philip followed up by saying that “we” (presumably San Francisco’s city government) “definitely want to wait until children have an opportunity to get vaccinated.” The window of opportunity for children to get vaccinated would be “eight weeks after the vaccine is available to kids.” After that, however, children would need to display the same “vaccine passports” as adults in San Francisco: “…but then at some point 5-to-11-year-olds will also have to show proof of vaccination to access some of those same settings.”

The age of mandatory vaccination has gone down and down in San Francisco. In August, anyone aged 12 and above must show proof of vaccination in order to go to most public locations, or even private businesses, as the San Francisco Chronicle reported. These same locations, including private businesses, are required to check for proof of vaccine, and have essentially been deputized as the “vaccination police,” as In-N-Out Burger recently characterized it, when they refused to do the city’s screening for them.

San Francisco isn’t the only one lowering the age, either.

New York City has begun to offer vaccine shots to children aged 5 to 11 as of Thursday, NBC New York reported. This comes only two days after the CDC approved Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for “emergency use” among children in that age block.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has even started offering bribes to parents who take their kids to city vaccination centers:

“It’s simple. Get your 5-to-11-year-old dosed at a city-run vaccine site and get $100. Getting these younger kids their first doses now allows plenty of time to have them fully protected before Christmas — and just might give moms and dads a bit of extra pocket money to help with Santa’s gift list. Everyone can use a little more money around the holidays but most importantly we want our kids and our families to be safe.”

Whether such policies will gain any public traction outside of liberal cities is an open question, however. Many have seen Tuesday’s elections as a bellwether for a sort of catch-all grab-bag of policies mostly championed by the left. As James Carville pointed out, “woke” politics was not a winning ticket for a nation that seems tired of such things.
