Democratic strategist James Carville had some strong words for Democrats and the reason for some recent high-profile defeats.
Carville made his comments on “PBS NewsHour” on Wednesday, as he vented his ire at failed Democratic priorities, singling out “stupid wokeness” in particular.
The setting for the tense interview came on the heels of Republican victories across the nation, but especially in Virginia, where Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears, and Jason Miyares prevailed, and seem to be on the verge of retaking the Virginia House of Delegates in an election seen by many as a sort of bellwether for President Joe Biden and progressive “woke” politics in general.
In New Jersey, Republicans gained ground in the legislature and came within spitting distance of unseating incumbent Democratic Governor Phil Murphy. Elsewhere, progressive ballot measures and candidates suffered defeats as voters rejected the woke agenda.
“NewsHour” host Judy Woodruff bluntly asked Carville “what went wrong?”
“What went wrong was this stupid wokeness. Don’t just look at Virginia and New Jersey. Look at Long Island, look at Buffalo, look at Minneapolis, even look at Seattle, Washington. I mean, this defund the police lunacy, this ‘take Abraham Lincoln’s name off schools, people see that,” Carville replied.
Carville went on to say that the progressive left has had a “suppressive effect” on Democratic prospects across the nation and suggested the woke crowd needs to go and “detox” from woke politics:
“Some of these people need to go to a woke detox center or something. They’re expressing language people just don’t use and there’s a backlash and a frustration at that. Suburbanites in northern Virginia [and] New Jersey, you know, pulled away a little bit. Youngkin never ran any ads against Biden,” he added.
Naturally, Carville had plenty to say about Virginia, along with most of the nation, and talked about the unbelievable stances Democrat Terry McAuliffe took during the election, such as telling parents they had no right to decide what their children are being taught. In Carville’s estimation, such things effectively did Youngkin’s campaigning for him:
“[Youngkin] just let the Democrats pull the pin and watch the grenade go off on them. And we’ve got to change this and not be about changing dictionaries, and change laws. And these faculty lounge people that sit around mulling about I don’t know what, they’re not working. Look what happened in Buffalo, again, Seattle, I think the Republicans may have won a city attorney’s race in Seattle, the autonomous zone. Who could even think of something that stupid?”
Carville had some blunt words for woke Democratic activists, arguably the most visible and vocal part of the current Democratic Party.
“I’ve got news for you: You’re hurting the party. You’re hurting the very people you want to help,” he asserted. “Terry [McAuliffe] got caught up – he’s a good friend of mine, he’s a good guy, you know, he got caught up – in something national, and we’ve got to change this internally, in my view.”
Regardless of how much of a “good guy” McAuliffe is, or isn’t, the fact remains that in the view of many commenters, the woke tide has turned, and is sucking the Democratic Party out to sea with it.
