AP fact checkers finally come for Joe Biden

AP fact-checkers finally nailed President Biden for repeating for the fifth time this year on Monday a factually impossible, bizarre, and pointless Amtrak story involving a former conductor named Angelo Negri while giving a speech in New Jersey.

Numerous media outlets have labeled the story as “false” including CNN and Fox News. But the AP really took note of the inconsistencies in the President’s story and took him to task for it. Biden repeated the story during a speech he gave at the NJ Transit maintenance facility in Kearny, NJ while touting the $1.2 trillion Senate-passed bipartisan infrastructure bill that would increase funding for Amtrak.

“I apologize because some of you have heard this,” Biden remarked.

“When I was vice president, I used to like to take the train home because my mom was very sick and dying. And I’d come home every weekend,” claimed Biden. His mother died in 2010.

“I’m getting on one Friday and then one of the senior guys on Amtrak, Angelo Negri … walks up to me and he goes, ‘Joey baby!’ He grabs my cheek. And I thought the Secret Service was gonna blow his head off. I swear to God, true story,” Biden claimed.

“I said, ‘What’s up, Ang?’ He said, ‘Joey. I read in a paper. I read in the paper, you traveled 1,000 — 1,200,000 miles on Air Force planes.’ Because they keep meticulous tabs of it,” Biden continued. “You know how many miles you travel on Amtrak, Joey? … 2,200,000 miles … So Joey, I don’t want to hear this about the Air Force anymore.”

“I’m a train guy,” the president declared after also asserting he’s a union guy. He concluded the story and then launched into his pitch for his Build Back Better agenda and bipartisan infrastructure bill.

One of the most glaring problems with Biden’s story is that Negri retired from Amtrak in 1993. He was not a conductor when Biden was vice president from 2009 through 2017. He passed away in May of 2014.

Typically, Biden claims the incident happened his last year as vice president but he didn’t mention that detail on Monday. The story has changed a little every time he tells it in regard to dates but none of them are right or even possible.

CNN reported in June that “Biden’s account simply does not add up. Biden did not reach the million-miles-flown mark as vice president until September 2015, according to his own past comments.”

Fox News contributor Joe Concha commented on Biden’s tale, “It’s the fifth time now that he keeps telling this story. So one would think that his chief communications advisor in Jen Psaki would step in and instruct him ‘maybe we don’t go down this road anymore,’ because you can be fact-checked on this, you sound foolish when you’re talking about it and I don’t even know what the point is of telling that story in the first place. So yeah, don’t cough in your hand and then shake people’s hands, don’t tell young school children ‘run from people who want to hold you accountable.’”

“It was just a disaster of a day for a president that’s having a disastrous 10 months. … He desperately needs a win because there haven’t been any wins up to this point,” Concha concluded.
