‘These people hate you’: Twitter rejects Psaki’s spin job on inflation being a ‘good thing’

White House press secretary Jen Psaki attempted to defend rapidly rising inflation during an interview with CNN host Jake Tapper on Friday, saying it was because of increased demand and was actually a “good thing.”

“I get the larger point that when we’re talking about economics, we’re coming out of recession,” Tapper stated. “But doesn’t it seem tone-deaf to say that rising prices and empty grocery store shelves are high-class problems? Isn’t that a bit dismissive?”

Tapper was referring to a tweet by Jason Furman, who is a former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. “Most of the economic problems we’re facing (inflation, supply chains, etc.) are high class problems,” Furman posited. “We wouldn’t have had them if the unemployment rate was still 10 percent. We would instead have a much worse problem.” That pronouncement was retweeted by White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain.

“Well, that’s not exactly what the tweet said, nor the retweet of the original tweet, which is what we’re talking about here,” Psaki equivocated. “The fact is the unemployment rate is about half what it was a year ago. So a year ago, people were in their homes. Ten percent of people were unemployed. Gas prices were low because nobody was driving. People weren’t buying goods because they didn’t have jobs.”

“Now more people have jobs,” Psaki claimed. “More people are buying goods. That’s increasing the demand. That’s a good thing. At the same time, we also know that the supply is low because we’re coming out of the pandemic and because a bunch of manufacturing sectors across the world have shut down because ports haven’t been functioning as they should be. These are all things we’re working through.”

She also vigorously defended Klain, “I can tell you from sitting in a lot of meetings with Ron Klain day in and day out, he is obsessed with lowering costs for the American people, and that’s driven from the president.”

Not only did Klain retweet a sentiment worthy of Marie Antoinette, he hypocritically attacked former Vice President Mike Pence on this issue back in 2018. “Will he hold up a Campbell Soup can and argue that price increases for basic food items really don’t hurt the middle class?’ Klain asked at the time. “Because I think that is the Trump admin economic message of the day.”

Tapper asked, “Why did Ron Klain think that rising prices was a serious concern under Trump and not under Biden?’

Psaki deflected by stating that the administration was trying to increase agricultural competition, get ports up and running, and work with industry and labor to move goods. “This is our focus every single day,” she declared.

“As long as we’re on the subject of class, it appears Mr. Klain and the entire Biden White House missed Economics 101,” Republican Georgia Representative Buddy Carter told the Daily Mail on Thursday.

“Inflation hurts working families and seniors on fixed incomes the most while their runaway spending is leaving all our children and grandchildren under a crushing mountain of debt to China,” he added.

GOP Representative Byron Donalds of Florida also remarked that the comments from Klain are indicative of the “tone-deafness” of the Biden administration.

“The cluelessness embroiling the White House stems from the top down, and that is evident with the tone-deaf statements coming from the Press Secretary and Chief of Staff,” he commented.

“While they ignore the reality of Biden’s failed economic agenda, everyday Americans feel the pain of Bidenomics at the pump, grocery store, and just about every aspect of daily life,” Donalds remarked. “The American people are not better off today than before Biden got into office, and skyrocketing inflation is one of the many reasons this is the case.”
