The timing of President Joe Biden’s federal vaccine mandate has Fox News host Dana Perino convinced that it may be part of a marketing ploy to boost California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s profile days ahead of his recall election.
Speaking on Fox News’ “The Five” this Friday, Perino noted how unusual it was for the president to announce such a divisive policy only two days out from the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
She also pointed out that there isn’t an urgent need for a federal vaccine mandate. The Delta variant has reportedly already peaked, daily vaccination rates have already been rising without any mandate and there’s already a federal employee vaccine mandate requiring vaccination or weekly testing.
“Remember yesterday, I said I don’t understand why he’s giving this speech today. We’re about to go into a very important, unifying weekend to mark 20 years since the 9/11 attacks. It wasn’t urgent. None of these things seem to be urgent,” she said.
And so why now? Perino believes the president chose to announce the policy on Sept. 9th for two specific reasons, one of which is more obvious: To distract from Afghanistan, “obviously.” But the other reason isn’t so obvious.

“I have a theory… IÂ think they did this for Gavin Newsom, the governor of California. Because the Democrats in California really wanted this. What happened in the first hour after the speech? The LA County school district mandated that any student in that school district that is eligible for a vaccine must get the vaccine,” she said.
This is true. The president concluded his announcement at 5:28 pm early Thursday evening, according to White House records.
Roughly an hour and a half later, Los Angeles Unified School District President Kelly Gonez announced a new policy mandating vaccines:
Today @LASchools approved a requirement for all students 12+ years to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine is safe, effective, & the best way to keep our students protected against the virus. Plus, the policy hadn’t even been fully written yet as of Thursday.
“[I]t’s not entirely clear how the new rules — which still have to be written — will work,” The Washington Post noted that afternoon.
So again, why the rush? Perhaps because, as Perino noted, Newsom is up for a recall vote next Tuesday amid accusations that his own vaccine mandate is tyrannical. According to reports, however, the president’s vaccine mandate is even stricter.
“President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Thursday that would require all federal executive-branch employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19. This would affect more than 150,000 workers across multiple federal agencies in California,” The Sacramento Bee reported Friday
“His order is more stringent than the one Gov. Gavin Newsom handed down for California state workers in July. Newsom’s order allows most public employees an option to submit to regular coronavirus testing in lieu of getting vaccinated against COVID-19,” the Bee added.
The president’s mandate also forces private businesses with 100+ employees to essentially either fire unvaccinated employees or force them to undergo weekly coronavirus testing.
The president’s sweeping mandate is so authoritarian and “tyrannical,” as some critics have described it, that it makes Newsom’s mandate look friendly in comparison — and that, according to Perino, may have been the point all along.

Democrats on the federal level have until the Fall of 2022 before they face another round of elections, and so there’s plenty of time for the president to re-earn the public’s support. Newsom doesn’t have this option.
Perino’s remarks came on the same day that Fox News reported that Newsom was seeing a “surge of support as recall election looms.”
“California Gov. Gavin Newsom appears to have favorable odds ahead of the state’s recall election next week, according to a poll released Friday,” the outlet reported.
“The study of likely voters, conducted by the University of California at Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, found that only 38.5% of those surveyed support efforts to recall Newsom, while 60% stated they oppose the move. Of those who took part in the questionnaire, only 1.5% had yet to make up their minds on how to vote in the election,” the report continued.
Following Perino’s remarks on “The Five,” co-host Jesse Watters said of her theory that “she’s right, usually.”
Earlier in the broadcast, he called out the pseudo-scientific inanity of the president’s words.
“We talked about not following the science yesterday. He comes out there, he says we need to protect the vaccinated from the unvaccinated. That makes no sense,” Watters noted.
Unless of course it was all part of a plot to help Newsom …
