Does the government, any government, have the right to force its citizens to harm themselves?
Before you answer that, please ponder this fictional scenario objectively:
What if there was a deadly pathogen that tended to accumulate in a person’s left arm because of the proximity to the heart. At just the right time, the invader amasses and attacks, resulting in agonizing death for the host.
Miraculously, a medical breakthrough occurs, and it is determined that if the person walks around with their left arm held above their head or swings it back and forth, it disrupts the pathogen’s ability to congregate and after a week or so of this they are out of danger. However, government experts know human nature and quickly determine that there are people who will refuse to swing their arm or even hold it overhead, and because of this, decide that the safest course of action for the greater good would be to mandate that everyone have their left arm amputated.
Would you do it? Before you answer, consider this: Many brave men and women in uniform sacrificed far more than a single limb for this nation.
What’s the point? Those heroes did so willingly, and not out of compulsion or intimidation. They assumed the risks for themselves, weighed their options, and chose to place themselves in harm’s way. They chose to do this so you wouldn’t have to.
Ultimately though, their sacrifice was for one thing: the defense of the Constitution of the United States. The same Constitution that is being trampled on by nearly every elected official at the federal and state level, and the entire enterprise hinges on the word “Liberty”.
Another word for liberty would be “freedom” or “the ability to have a choice,” “to choose for oneself”. In the Declaration of Independence, our founders viewed this as sacrosanct when they stated that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator will certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
They further cemented that concept in the 5th Amendment which says no person shall be deprived by the federal government of life, liberty or property, without due process of law. And in the 14th Amendment, they said the states are bound by the same constraint.
Therefore, any law or regulation, at the federal or state level, that directly infringes on the innate “liberty” or the “freedoms” of the People of the United States is clearly and incontrovertibly un-constitutional and presents a clear and present danger to the survival of the Nation. Because of this, it should be resisted with extreme prejudice by all levels of law enforcement.
But what about “the greater good”?
That is a lie propagated by communists. Any society or government that functions with a priority on the group as a whole, and not on securing individual rights, will cease to exist in short order. Think about it.
A group, no matter the size, is always made up of individuals. Consequently, for the group to achieve maximum potential, the individual members must also function at that same level. In many cases, the synergistic effect of this results in achievements that eclipse, by far, the potential of the individual.
However, any group with a sole focus on the collective will ignore individual deficits, thereby guaranteeing that the group always functions at less than maximum potential. And, absent a refocus back on the individuals, the continued degradation of the individual members will eventually result in the destruction of the group. That is why communism cannot, and never will, succeed. Communism is inherently its own worst enemy.
Communists regard the individual as a resource for the state. Nothing more. It has no room for unique thought or creativity or achievement. The only thing that matters is the state, the group, the collective. The United States is just the opposite. Its structure is anchored in a bedrock of rugged individualism. Americans are taught from infancy that they can “achieve their dreams” if they are just willing to fight for them.
Our founders recognized that we, as individuals, are all “created equal” by God. And it is out of this profoundly simple recognition, that we have enjoyed unprecedented prosperity and success. This singular precept provided the framework for the freedoms and opportunities — the liberty — to choose our own path and become the greatest nation the world has ever known.
However, should we sacrifice that liberty for the prospect of safety, we will undermine the very foundational aspect of our nation that makes us unique on all the earth and in all of history. We will cease to exist as “one nation under God” and as President Reagan stated, we will simply be “a nation gone under.”
