University disenrolls over one hundred students over vaccination status

Virginia Tech officially disenrolled 134 unvaccinated students on Tuesday for non-compliance and for not submitting proof of vaccination in their crackdown over mandated COVID vaccines, according to university officials.

Approximately 37,000 students have enrolled for the semester at Virginia Tech. Classes began last week but not for everyone. Those who didn’t produce proof that they had been vaccinated or provide exemption documents are out of luck, university spokesman Mark Owczarski told the Roanoke Times.

“They did not submit vaccination documentation or receive a medical or religious exemption,” Owczarski declared.

Owczarski claims the university “does not know whether any of these students were not planning to return for reasons unrelated to the COVID-19 vaccine requirement.”

He also declared that attempts had been made to contact the 134 students and that they are welcome to re-enroll at the university if they comply and provide their vaccine documents.

The school also requires all students and faculty to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

The students represented about 0.4% of the university’s enrolled students. Their tuition could have accounted for an estimated $2 million to $3 million in undergraduate, in-state fees as well as room and board, the newspaper noted.

So far, only 31 students and one employee have tested positive for the virus out of more than 2,000 tests that have been administered, the Roanoke Times reported.

The university previously announced earlier this summer that it would require students to be vaccinated against the virus by Oct. 1. The school set an August 6 deadline for students to upload proof of vaccination in order to maintain their class schedule and housing selection after announcing the requirement in June.

This follows the University of Virginia giving 238 students the boot just days ago for failure to comply with their vaccination requirements. The school contends that only 48 of those kicked out were enrolled for fall classes.

Not only is Virginia Tech requiring vaccinations for all staff and students, it is also reportedly teaming up with the University of Virginia to develop a new vaccine to prevent COVID-19 as well as its variants.

Dr. Steven Zeichner, who is from the University of Virginia, and Dr. Xiang-Jin Meng, who is from Virginia Tech, are collaborating to create a fusion peptide vaccine. Their vaccine could be ready for human trials in as little as six months.

The fight over mandated vaccines and masks at universities is raging across the nation as students head back to school.

Four female soccer players sued Western Michigan University for threatening to remove them from the team because they refused to be vaccinated. They contend the mandate violates their religious beliefs.

In a number of states, including Florida and Texas, Republican governors have banned government vaccine mandates at publicly funded universities.

In California and New York, almost all public and private universities are requiring that students get vaccinated.

Forbes is reporting that there will undoubtedly be more announcements from schools in the coming weeks as deadlines for vaccine mandates by many were set for early September. New Jersey’s Montclair State University stated last week that it had roughly 480 students at risk of being disenrolled with its September 2 deadline looming. Hundreds of colleges across the country are now requiring COVID-19 vaccinations.
