The Department of Defense was caught by social media users doing a PR spin as they sent out a tweet using a photo of what they incompetently claimed was an American Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft evacuating Afghans but instead was one that belonged to the United Arab Emirates.
“Afghan civilians board @usairforce C-17 Globemasters at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. #HKIA,” the DoD tweeted. The DoD shared three photographs in its tweet. Savvy individuals on Twitter quickly pointed out that wasn’t our plane and instead of it saying “U.S. Air Force,” it said “UAE Air Force” on the fuselage of the aircraft.
On top of that gaffe, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff made a media appearance where he totally contradicted President Biden on the evacuation of Americans and troop drawdown in Afghanistan. He said it was “unlikely” the Biden administration would be able to evacuate Americans and allies from Afghanistan by the Aug. 31 deadline that Biden had mandated.
“Given the number of Americans who still need to be evacuated, the number of [Special Immigrant Visas], the number of others who are members of the Afghan press, civil society leaders, women leaders. It’s hard for me to imagine all of that can be accomplished between now and the end of the month,” he said.

“It’s hard for me to see that being complete by the end of the month,” Schiff stated later.
He also said that ISIS was a very real threat in Afghanistan and that the intel community was very aware that the Taliban had the ability to take over Afghanistan. Biden had previously said the exact opposite of what Schiff just stated.
“I think the threat to the airport is very real and very substantial and this has been a concern of mine for, for some days now that this would make a very attractive target for ISIS,” Schiff alarmingly remarked.
“The intelligence agencies’ assessments of the Afghan government’s ability to maintain itself became increasingly pessimistic over the course of the last six months,” asserted Schiff.
“And there were any number of warnings that the Taliban might take over,” he claimed. “And some that included the potential of a very rapid takeover. At the same time, though, I think it’s also fair to say that no one predicted such a rapid collapse, a rapid and complete collapse of Afghan government and forces.”
So Biden was lying?? https://t.co/uzkglCVJfd

Adding to the convoluted messaging from Democrats and the Biden administration is the Taliban’s proclamation on Tuesday that Afghan nationals are no longer allowed to leave the country. They are openly opposing any extension of evacuation flights or troop withdrawals and have threatened the U.S. if they go past the Aug. 31st deadline with “consequences.”
“We are not in favor of allowing Afghans to leave,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters on Tuesday.
“They [the Americans] have the opportunity, they have all the resources, they can take all the people that belong to them but we are not going to allow Afghans to leave and we will not extend the deadline,” he announced.
With Biden's Aug. 31 deadline looming, U.S. military will have to start pulling out late this week to meet it. Taliban said today it will not extend it. In addition to 6,000 U.S. troops at Kabul airport, there are dozens of armored vehicles and aircraft, including Apache gunships

“The way to the airport has been closed now. Afghans are not allowed to go there now, foreigners are allowed to go but we have stopped Afghan nationals to go because the crowd is more, there is danger that people will lose their lives, there might be a stampede,” Mujahid reportedly said throwing yet another wrench into Biden’s plans and further muddying the waters on the evacuation of thousands of American citizens.
The DoD was relentlessly mocked for the botched PR move with some believing “we are doomed” since we can’t even read the markings on an aircraft:
That’s not a @usairforce C-17, @DeptofDefense. Wrong country. Glad to know you guys are in command of the situation.

You guys are trying so hard for a good PR moment. It’s not a US plane. pic.twitter.com/yEmfQ5H9aA

OH MY GOD This is our own Department of Defense COMPLETELY wrong about what’s going on in this picture.
It’s not even a goddamned American plane. https://t.co/TBGqwCnaei

That’s a United Arab Emirates C-17.
Competence is just oozing all over the federal government right now https://t.co/bqFo1giHF5

So now our own Department of Defense not only can’t identify aircraft by their national insignia, they don’t even bother to READ the markings on the nose. We are doomed.
