Australia shooting shelter dogs to protect volunteers from virus, crosses more lines of COVID insanity

A rural council in Australia has outraged animal activists and is being investigated by the government for allegedly shooting a number of shelter dogs due to their interpretation of new COVID-19 restrictions.

Bourke Shire Council reportedly killed the dogs to prevent volunteers at an animal shelter from traveling to pick the dogs up, all under the guise of protecting them from the coronavirus, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Bourke Shire is located in a rural area of New South Wales.

“OLG has been informed that the council decided to take this course of action to protect its employees and community, including vulnerable Aboriginal populations, from the risk of COVID-19 transmission,” a spokesman from the government watchdog group reported.

The Office of Local Government is looking into the horrific incident to ascertain if companion animal and cruelty prevention laws have been broken.

One of the dogs that were killed had reportedly just had a litter of pups. A source claims that the shelter volunteers were extremely upset over the action taken against the dogs and that they had COVID-safe measures already in place to handle the dogs.

What makes this even worse is there was no apparent valid reason for the panic or the draconian measures. There have been no recent COVID cases in Cobar where this took place.

Animal Liberation campaign manager Lisa Ryan is demanding an investigation into the grisly matter.

“We are deeply distressed and completely appalled by this callous dog shooting and we totally reject council’s unacceptable justifications that this killing was apparently undertaken as part of a COVID- safe plan,” Ryan declared.

So far, no action has been taken against the council over the euthanizing of the dogs. Australians are demanding answers.

“While the Liberal-National government twiddles its thumbs on animal welfare issues, more animals are being killed,” Greens animal welfare spokeswoman Abigail Boyd asserted. “Council pounds are paid for by local communities, and it is clear that shooting lost and unclaimed dogs housed in these publicly funded facilities falls far short of community expectations.”

The Office of Local Government claims that it has issued advice to all councils concerning the operation of pounds during the pandemic, including changing procedures to ensure the continuation of services while keeping staff and volunteers safe.

“Councils are also encouraged to continue to work with re-homing organizations and volunteers to care for animals, where that can be undertaken consistent with NSW Health advice,” a spokesman stated.

On July 30, the agency said pounds and shelters could remain open to the public and designated their staff as authorized workers in locked-down areas.

“Accordingly, prospective new owners should still be encouraged to ‘adopt not shop,’ consistent with NSW Health advice,” the OLG commented.

Many are describing the insane actions of the council as simply evil and totally unnecessary. Between forced vaccination, deploying hundreds of Australian Defence Force soldiers to ensure compliance, and reported beatings in the street over Australians protesting COVID restrictions, some critics say Australia has gone “full Nazi.”
