Left-wing influencer Hasan Piker who has made his fortune as a socialist commentator, starting at his uncle’s Young Turks Network before leaving to build his own independent career, is facing some serious backlash and questions of authenticity amid news that he purchased an almost $3 million home in the wealthy and coveted neighborhood of West Hollywood.
Despite his socialist leanings, Piker seems to have profited considerably from capitalism. Piker’s uncle is Cenk Uygur, the co-founder of The Young Turks, a leftist news and commentary platform that ranks as the longest-running news and politics show online.
While working for his uncle, he created and hosted “The Breakdown” and “Agitprop with Hasan Piker” before eventually leaving to start his own streaming career on the platform, Twitch.
There was no lack of criticism for Piker’s purchase on Twitter.
“[I]t’s just flat out unethical to be profiting off of socialism and buying yourself a 3 million dollar home in a state that has one of the highest homelessness rates in the country. if you’re mad I find this to be gross and unprincipled behavior I don’t really care lol,’ one Twitter user clapped back at Piker’s attempts to defend his purchase.
“[Y]ou literally have a patreon link on your profile lmao,” Piker wrote back.

Piker remained unapologetic and wrote in another defense of himself on Twitter, “[I] live in la. the housing market here is f**ked. why is the argument that i should keep renting or that i should go gentrify somewhere else? will this solve the problems? no. ppl are mad cus lefty w house. that’s it.”
pretty much what everyone’s argument reduces to. i live in la. the housing market here is fucked. why is the argument that i should keep renting or that i should go gentrify somewhere else? will this solve the problems? no. ppl are mad cus lefty w house. that’s it. https://t.co/7GCzUo9UKH

The political streaming commentator and new homeowner posted a series of other tweets in response to the backlash he faced:

Later on Friday, Piker posted a link to a new live stream, (***Language Warning***):

Many users criticized the host for the purchase which seems antithetical to his own ideology, but just as many others came to his defense.
Piker has come under fire in the past for controversial comments made on his show.
In 2019, the host said, “America deserved 9/11, dude, f—- it. I’m saying it. Like, we f—-ing totally brought it on ourselves, dude, holy s—-. Look at the way that this dips—t is running his f—-ing mouth, justifying genocide right now. How is anything I’m saying controversial? We f—-ing fund the people who did 9/11 still to this day.”
Piker also mocked Rep. Dan Crenshaw’s war injury on his show:
“This guy has the understanding of foreign policy of, like, a 12-year-old. Didn’t he go to war and, like, literally lose his eye because some mujahideen — a brave f—-ing soldier — f—-ed his eye hole with their [expletive]?”
Piker isn’t the only faux-socialist who profited in a capitalist system, just look at Sen. Bernie Sanders, the father of the American socialist movement, who also happens to be a millionaire with three homes. And another young socialist, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who moved into a luxury apartment building in D.C. that does not offer affordable units under the city’s Affordable Dwelling Units program, the Washington Examiner reported.
