Former Obama official calls for unvaxxed Americans to be put on no-fly list: ‘Flying is not a right’

Former Obama Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security Juliette Kayyem is proclaiming that “flying is not a right” while calling for unvaccinated Americans to be added to a federal domestic “no-fly list.”

“The White House has rejected a nationwide vaccine mandate — a sweeping suggestion that the Biden administration could not easily enact if it wanted to — but a no-fly list for unvaccinated adults is an obvious step that the federal government should take,” Kayyem wrote in an op-ed for The Atlantic this week. She is also a CNN national security analyst and a professor at Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

The article was originally called, “Unvaccinated people belong on the no-fly list.” But the media outlet and/or Kayyem evidently thought that was a bit too brazen and updated the title to, “Unvaccinated People Need to Bear the Burden.” In the piece, she argues that there is already precedent through existing TSA regulations that the agency can legally determine who flies and who doesn’t.

“When you go to the airport, you see two kinds of security rules. Some apply equally to everyone; no one can carry weapons through the TSA checkpoint,” Kayyem noted.

“But other protocols divide passengers into categories according to how much of a threat the government thinks they pose. If you submit to heightened scrutiny in advance, TSA PreCheck lets you go through security without taking off your shoes; a no-fly list keeps certain people off the plane entirely. Not everyone poses an equal threat. Rifling through the bags of every business traveler and patting down every preschooler and octogenarian would waste the TSA’s time and needlessly burden many passengers,” she contended.

She took that line of thought and extended it to further claim that the “same principle” justifies blocking unvaccinated individuals from flying.

“Flying is not a right,” she remarked and then stated that “the federal government is the sole entity that can regulate the terms and conditions of airline safety.”

“It’s not unless you think it’s a right to fly. And it’s not, any more than if you thought it was a right for me to… go to The Lion King on Broadway. These are not rights. These are privileges,” she told Mediaite. “The government is just sort of wishing that people would take vaccines, like now we have to make it hurt, hurt in terms of a burden to not take vaccines.”

Kayyem also posited that having to produce proof of vaccination, commonly referred to as a vaccine passport, would be a “minor inconvenience.”

“For the privilege of flying, Americans already give up a lot: We disclose our personal information, toss our water bottles, extinguish our cigarette butts, and lock our guns in checked luggage. For vaccinated people, having to show proof of vaccination when flying would be a minor inconvenience,” she asserted.

“More than another recitation of statistics about vaccines’ benefits or yet another appeal to the common good, the deprivation of movement will win over doubters,” Kayyem wrote.

She was evidently emboldened to write her op-ed because President Biden has been actively pressuring states and businesses to also require proof of vaccination for employees. He is also pushing a vaccine mandate for federal workers.

Under the leadership of Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, the military is preparing to announce all active-duty military personnel must be vaccinated as well.
