Pelosi violates own House rules, removes mask for photo-op. Fines? Arrests?

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) doubled down on Friday as she arrogantly violated her own mask edict, not once, but twice in the same day as she posed for a photo-op at a swearing-in ceremony and then again at a podium as other Democratic leaders spoke.

The first occurrence happened as Pelosi was administering the oath to Rep. Jake Ellzey (R-TX). She asked, “Can we take off our masks just for the photo?” Pelosi then pulled off her mask, which caused Ellzey, his wife, and their two young children to do the same.

Later, as she spoke from a podium surrounded by top Democratic leaders, she didn’t bother to wear her face mask in the first place. After introducing Majority Leader of the House Steny Hoyer, a maskless Pelosi stepped to the side and never put on a mask. This is in direct violation of her own mask mandate.

The incidents occurred following Capitol Attending Physician Dr. Brian Monahan announcing on Tuesday that masks are once again mandatory in the interior spaces of “all House Office Buildings, the Hall of the House, and House Committee Meetings” when more than one person is in attendance. His proclamation came hot on the heels of the CDC urging fully vaccinated individuals to mask up indoors in some cases where there is “substantial” or “high” coronavirus transmission. He met with Pelosi before the mandate was reissued according to a senior GOP aide who reported it to the New York Post.

Tensions have boiled over between Democrats and Republicans during the last week. Pelosi called House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy a “moron” on Wednesday after he took a stand against her draconian mask mandate. McCarthy then accused Pelosi of “hypocrisy” during a speech. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Marjorie Taylor Greene, (R-GA), and Ralph Norman (R-SC) stated this week that they were filing a lawsuit against the 82-year-old “tyrant” in reference to Pelosi’s actions.

The resurrected mandate caused an uproar among Republicans, who protested the mandate as well as the Capitol Police issuing a memo declaring that any staff member or visitor who was caught not wearing a mask could be arrested. Officers were instructed not to arrest members but to report them so they could be fined. Pelosi denied being the one who prompted the move by the police but Republicans are not buying it.

Capitol Police tried to tamp the anger down over their memo by stating on Twitter that there was “no reason it should ever come to someone being arrested. Anyone who does not follow the rules will be asked to wear a mask or leave the premises.” It did not appear to have the effect they were looking for.

Approximately 50 unmasked Republicans from the House of Representatives held their own protest on Thursday in the Senate where masks are not required. GOP Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Ted Cruz (R-TX) torched the mandate in speeches given from the floor.

“I’m standing with my staff and telling my staff to do what is in their best interests and I’ll back them up,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) told Fox News on Friday. “If Nancy Pelosi wants to come after my staff she will have to come through me.

“This is not the way we conduct business here. We can agree to disagree. This is the line in the sand,” Roy declared. “We’re a free country and I am going to act like it and will defend the freedom of Americans and my staff to do what is in their interest, not the will of Nancy Pelosi.”

People took note of Pelosi’s arrogant hypocrisy concerning her mask mandate:
