‘Hell ya I would leave!’ Lindsey Graham urges GOP to flee town like TX Dems did over infrastructure bill

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) tore into the Democrats’ massive $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill suggesting that GOP senators mimic Texas Democrats and flee DC to prevent a quorum from taking place in order to pass it.

In an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Graham said that if necessary he would follow in the steps of the Texas Democrats who fled their state last week in an effort to kill voting legislation.

“Hell yeah, I would leave,” Graham bluntly proclaimed, referring to Texas Democrats who jetted out of their state to prevent a quorum on election integrity bills. “I would use everything lawfully in my toolbox to prevent rampant inflation. If it takes me not showing up to stop that, I will do it because if we pass that bill, you’re going to have inflation through the roof.”

“If for some reason, they pass the budget resolution to bring that bill to the floor of the United States Senate … You gotta have a quorum to pass a bill in the Senate. I would leave before I’d let that happen. So, to my Republican colleagues, we may learn something from our Democratic friends in Texas when it comes to avoiding a $3.5 trillion tax-and-spend package. Leave town,” Graham urged.

Many Republicans mocked dozens of Democrats who took two private jets to depart Texas and go to Washington, D.C.

“As for the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package, designed to pass without a single Republican vote, Joe Manchin says that has to be paid for,” he said. “The only way you can do that is through a massive tax increase. The reconciliation package is not infrastructure. It’s big government. All kinds of new social programs unrelated to infrastructure. We’ll see if they can get Democratic support,” Graham commented.

The Constitution states that a quorum of 51 senators must be present for the Senate to conduct official business. Since the chamber is split 50-50, all Republican senators would have to agree to Graham’s proposal for his plan to work and that is extremely unlikely to happen.

Passing a bill through the reconciliation process requires a simple majority. Since Democrats hold 50 Senate seats, Vice President Kamala Harris would be the tiebreaking vote ensuring a victory for the left.

Graham’s remarks follow Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announcing last week that the Budget Committee had reached an agreement for a $3.5 trillion spending package that furthers President Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan.

Democrats are planning on passing the legislation without GOP support and by avoiding a filibuster. They also want to stuff the budget with funding for things such as granting amnesty for illegal immigrants, expanding Medicare, education, childcare, and addressing climate change. The left is calling all these items “human infrastructure.”

“This is the most significant piece of legislation passed since the Great Depression, and I’m delighted to be part of having helped to put it together,” Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said in a statement.

Graham stated that he would support actual infrastructure that would cost approximately $950 billion. That would include roads, bridges, and ports. But he bluntly asserted that “the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package designed to pass without a single Republican vote” is “not infrastructure.”

The senator called the reconciliation package “a liberal wish list,” that contains “all kinds of new social programs unrelated to infrastructure.”

Graham also clapped back at illegal immigration being included in the bill. He warned that if Democrats “put legalizing illegal immigrants in that bill, you’re going to have a complete run on the border.”

“It would lead to an invasion of illegal immigrants if we put amnesty in the $3.5 trillion bill so I’d do anything I could to stop that,” Graham adamantly declared.
