When the going gets tough, Democratic lawmakers have pretty much established by now that they will flee — then again, this is the party that makes up the rules as they go along, as the late Alcee Hastings once proclaimed.
The nation saw this a few years ago in Wisconsin when Democrats took the extreme measure to protect labor unions, and again on Monday in Texas when Democrats fled a legislative session for Washington, D.C., to prevent a quorum ahead of the anticipated passage of a voter integrity bill.
Reveling in all the attention they’re getting for what is being billed as a “flee-ibuster,” the lawmakers have been eagerly documenting their flight on social media. But state Rep. Julie Johnson opened the entourage up for serious scorn when she included a photo of a number of them on a bus — sans masks — along with a case of beer.
The tweet would eventually be deleted, but the internet is forever and screengrabs of the photo continued to circulate.
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican, shared the photo while tweeting: “Smiling House Dems fly off to DC on a private jet with a case of Miller Lite, breaking House quorum, abandoning their constituents, while the Senate still works. It’s my hope that Senate Dems report tomorrow to do what they were elected to do. We will vote on #SB1.”

As for attention, while it’s not clear exactly when the Democratic lawmakers plan to return to Texas, but Gov. Greg Abbott has vowed to arrest them when they do — talk about a showdown at high noon.
“Once they step back into the state of Texas, they will be arrested and brought to the Texas capital and we will be conducting business,” Abbott said Monday evening in an interview on Fox News.
Democrats and their media allies justify their actions by claiming Republican efforts to ensure a fair vote amounts to voter suppression, recklessly throwing around terms like “Jim Crow.”
“Under the provisions of this bill, you can go into a polling place and be greeted by a member of the Proud Boys who is over your shoulder….this is a suppression session to suppress our rights. The eyes of the nation are on Texas.” – @TMFtx #txlege pic.twitter.com/SEA0AbCI3N

Mollie Hemingway, a Fox News contributor, summed the tactic up perfectly in a tweet this week.
“‘Voter suppression’ is the Democrats’ propaganda term for even the most basic election integrity laws. Dems/media view election security as an existential threat to their power and are escalating their rhetoric against those who seek free, fair, secure elections. Very dangerous,” she tweeted.
Confident that much of the national media is in their corner, the Democrats have no shame in their game. Hell, Texas state Rep. Diego Bernal even flaunted his embrace of critical race theory, the toxic concept that claims America is an irredeemable racist nation.
Headed to DC.
Voting is a sacred right that needs our protection, not be a game with rules that can be rigged to guarantee winners & losers.
It is my job & duty to keep that from happening. #txlege
PS- While I’m at it, might as well brush up on my Critical Race Theory. pic.twitter.com/Y97BQZfpiH

But that case of beer… here’s a sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:

Tell me another job where someone could grab a case of beer and leave during the middle of the day, hop on a private plane to skip out on work, and then expect to still get paid? #txlege @TexasHDCC

The fact that Texas Dems bought Miller Lite as their travel beer tells you all you need to know on their decision making.

Lol…the Texas Democrats fleeing the capitol decided the case of beer wasn’t the best look. pic.twitter.com/BXbEHtuo0W

You are a Texas Democrat, fleeing the state in an attempt to stop them from making voting more secure. You are posting pictures of you noble actions on social media. But why did you need to bring a case of beer with you? https://t.co/FSME5TLzP6

With all the great microbreweries in Texas, couldn’t the runaway Texas Dems stocked up with a bolder tasting Texas beer for their BYOB road trip? pic.twitter.com/1wJM4cwQmf

There were more cases of beer on the Texas Dems’ bus than there are masks on their flight. Yikes! #RulesForTheeButNotForMe https://t.co/DwSOuxYBvi

Texas Democrats break federal law by not wearing masks on flight. What airline allowed these lawmakers to violate federal mask law? Why are they not banned from future flights? https://t.co/1sI8cuaYmV

These Texas Democrats were not ready for primetime.
Incredible that in planning private planes, chartered buses, lodging in DC for several weeks, selfie videos, and a solid supply of beer, they forget to actually settle on a message. https://t.co/GXK9ss1kkO
