Larry Elder on why he went from ‘hell no!’ to jumping into recall race to oust ‘arrogant’ Gavin Newsom

Black conservative talk radio host Larry Elder is entering the California gubernatorial recall race against Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom whose campaign contends the effort is “led by Trump white nationalists.”

Fox News host Sean Hannity made the announcement on his show Tuesday. The “sage from South Central” could no longer sit idly by while an “arrogant” Newsom tried to regain control and finish off the state of California. He enters a crowded race with more than two dozen Republican candidates nipping at Newsom’s heels with a little more than two months left to go before the election. Other contenders include former Olympian transgender Caitlyn Jenner, failed 2018 gubernatorial candidate John Cox, state Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, former U.S. Rep. Doug Ose, and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

“We have rising crime, rising homelessness, cost of living,” Elder told Hannity. “The more I looked at it, the more I saw how arrogantly this governor has handled the pandemic, imposing the most strict coronavirus lockdown in any of the 50 states while violating them at that French restaurant with the very people that set down the mandates while his own kids still enjoyed in-school, private education.” He called the state “ungovernable.”

“Do you like the crime? Do you like the homelessness?” Elder asked citizens of California. “Do you like the fact that the cost of living is causing young people to leave the state?”

“I’m running for governor because the decline of California isn’t the fault of its people,” Elder proclaimed in a released statement. “Our government is what’s ruining the Golden State. Our schools are closed to both students and their parents. Our streets aren’t safe from rising violent crime or the disaster of rising homelessness. And the scandals of Sacramento aren’t going to stop on their own. It’s time to tell the truth. We’ve got a state to save.”

“People are fed up,” Elder told Fox News during a phone call interview. “2.2 million people signed this petition, which meant a lot of Democrats and a lot of independents who voted for this man changed their minds.”

“Gavin Newsom is trying to characterize this race as a race against himself and a bunch of Trump-supporting white nationalists,” Elder stated. “Now you’ve seen me on TV… do I look like a white nationalist?”

Fox News contributor, civil rights attorney, and Los Angeles conservative talk radio host Leo Terrell is openly endorsing Elder and is proclaiming that he is the “best candidate” for the job.

“Larry represents principle,” he declared. “That recall petition could not exist without Democrats who were upset with Gavin Newsom. Last year was the first time I wanted to leave L.A. County. I wanted to move because it was horrendous here and it’s horrible.”

“Gavin Newsom needs to be recalled. Larry Elder is the best candidate to replace Gavin Newsom. It’s not even close, hands down on the issues of homelessness, education, school choice,” Terrell stated.

Elder, 69, told the Associated Press that he is motivated to run against Newsom because he has a “fire in the belly to see if I can do something … to move the needle in the right direction.”

The recall effort was originally launched in January of 2020. As Newsom stumbled and got caught hypocritically eating out maskless with friends while schools closed and businesses suffered due to his heavy-handed pandemic restrictions, California residents signaled they had had enough of his destructive policies.

“This is a man, Gavin Newsom, who’s turned his back on the average Californian,” Elder commented. “There’s a war against the middle class, a war against the working class. This man kept his own winery open while he was shutting down other businesses.”

California’s economy reopened last month but a lot of damage has been done. Homelessness is rampant across the state, the crime rate is skyrocketing, and water and power shortages are looming in the drought-stricken state. Corruption and graft are at an all-time high in California with a multibillion-dollar fraud scandal at the state unemployment agency also taking its toll, according to reports.

“I think this is a race between Gavin Newsom and me. I don’t think about the other candidates,” Elder bluntly stated to the AP.

During the Sept. 14 recall election, voters will answer two questions: Should Newsom be removed? And following that, who should replace him? The votes on the second question only count if a majority votes yes on the first question.

With the field being so crowded, a winner may only have to get 20 or 30 percent of the vote to step into Newsom’s shoes as governor.

In a statement, Newsom campaign spokesman Dan Newman arrogantly dismissed Elder as just “another Trump supporter” competing for a share of the former president’s base of voters.

But Elder isn’t just warning California, he’s warning the nation over the spread of Democratic policies.

“Why should somebody outside of California care? Because, like in Washington, D.C., we have a Democrat leader, both chambers of the Legislature are controlled by the Democrats, we’ve got supermajorities running our Senate and our Assembly,” he said. “Republicans don’t even need to show up, and look what’s happened to the state. So the way California goes, the way the rest of the country goes – coming to a theater near you if we don’t do something about turning around California.”
