NY Times: Flying the American flag from the back of a pickup truck is a divisive act – because Trump!

Just in time for Independence Day, the New York Times again seems triggered by the American flag flying on Long Island.

In an example of what passes for contemporary journalism that includes quotes from a grand total of six people, a Times reporter suggests that Old Glory is a form of disunity, and it is, of course, apparently Donald Trump’s fault.

Recall that just in early June, the math-challenged, New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay went on MSNBC and said that she found it disturbing that lots of pickup trucks on Long Island displayed American flags and Trump flags.

The Times subsequently released a statement saying that Gay’s comments were taken out of context and that she was really highlighting how the MAGA movement had politicized the flag.

Fast forward as the Times returns to the Long Island, N.Y., scene of the presumed thought crime, as it were, in an article headlined “A Fourth of July symbol of unity that may no longer unite,” in which a staff reporter wrote, in part:

Politicians of both parties have long sought to wrap themselves in the flag. But something may be changing: Today, flying the flag from the back of a pickup truck or over a lawn is increasingly seen as a clue, albeit an imperfect one, to a person’s political affiliation in a deeply divided nation.

Supporters of former President Donald J. Trump have embraced the flag so fervently — at his rallies, across conservative media and even during the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol — that many liberals…worry that the left has all but ceded the national emblem to the right.

What was once a unifying symbol — there is a star on it for each state, after all — is now alienating to some, its stripes now fault lines between people who kneel while “The Star-Spangled Banner” plays and those for whom not pledging allegiance is an affront.

The Times’ premise is, as you would expect, receiving a salute from America Last, liberal Twitter.

Others, however, have concluded that the news outlet known or formerly regarded as the paper of record, and which generally spins for the Democrats, is clueless. Here is a sampling:
