The reason so many left-wing Americans have been fooled into believing that taxing billionaires is all it will take to fund socialism may just be because, like MSNBC anchor Brian Williams and The New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay, they failed 4th-grade math.
As Gay, a far-left zealot obsessed with identity politics, was speaking late Thursday on MSNBC about since-withdrawn Democrat presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg’s ad-spending blitz, she claimed that all the money he’d spent trying to win the Democrat primary could have been used to provide every American with $1 million…
“Somebody tweeted recently that, actually, with the money he’s spent, he could have given every American a million dollars,” she said.
A screenshot of the since-deleted tweet she’d cited may be seen below:

Mekita Rivas, a contributor for Glamour magazine, Refinery29, The Washington Post and other allegedly esteemed left-wing outlets, has since put her Twitter profile on private mode and changed her bio to read, “I know, I’m bad at math.”
Unfortunately, Gay and Williams didn’t “know.”
“When I read [the tweet] tonight on social media, it kind of all became clear,” Williams replied. “Bloomberg spent $500 million on ads. U.S. Population 327 million. Don’t tell us if you’re ahead of us on the math. He could have given each American $1 million and have had lunch money left over. It’s an incredible way of putting it.”
“It’s an incredible way of putting it. It’s true,” Gay concurred.
Fact-check: FALSE.
Listen:
What is wrong with these people? This would be right here if there were 327 people in the US. And this reflects horribly on the NY Times too. Can someone stop and think for two seconds? pic.twitter.com/kZJYYoC6gD

For those who have yet to complete 4th grade math, $500,000,000 divided by 327,000,000 is not equal to $1,000,000. It’s not even close.
I don’t feel like that’s the correct math. pic.twitter.com/ASjlbQUIyN

And that three alleged respectable media professionals — Williams, Gay, and Rivas — would say otherwise appears to be a testament to how far the media have fallen.
What happened to fact-checking? What happened to accuracy? What happened to common sense? Or were they all sacrificed at the altar of the going progressive mantra, which is that “socialism is good,” when in reality it’s clearly not?
And then people wonder why so many misinformed millennials would prefer to live in a socialist country. Brian Riedl of the Manhattan Institute theorized in a tweet that this may be because the proponents of socialism “cannot do basic arithmetic.”
Look:
Its bad enough to have an entire political movement that believes “the billionayas” can fund socialism because they cannot do basic arithmetic.
Now we have MSNBC hosts & NYT editorial board members doing TV segments along these lines.

Independent journalist and commentator Mike Cernovich added that the same sorts of people who clamor loudly for socialism but are unable to perform 4th-grade math tend to be just as vocal about other ill-thought-out policy proposals such as the Green New Deal:
These are the people telling us to completely change our way of life due to climate change science. https://t.co/6FZNj75CjE

See other criticism below:
Brian Williams and a member of the NYT Editorial Board thought that the $500 million Bloomberg spent on ads could have been used to give “each American $1 million” instead.
This would be true…if America’s population was 500.

this passed multiple eyes. A producer…editors…I mean not one person said “wait….everyone just wait…this tweet is wrong on every level”.

Seriously. A buck a pop. And these people think everyone would be a millionaire. How do they pay rent? Mortgage? Anything? I mean, if their pay chks were off, would the notice? This is the most painful kind of stupid. #MathMatters

Note how many critics have contrasted the arrogance of media elites — who perceive themselves as all-wise, all-knowing oracles and experts of truth — with their incessantly displayed inability to separate fact from fiction.
SERIOUSLY. YOU TWEETED THIS @MARAGAY. I’m getting a headache. pic.twitter.com/IR2GkPA5KS

In Gay’s case, she’s also known for:
- Lecturing Sen. Ted Cruz, a Hispanic man, about how white men aren’t allowed to talk about Frederick Douglas …
- Claiming “America was never great” …
- Describing President Donald Trump as a “white nationalist” …
- Comparing the GOP’s opposition to the Democrats’ failed impeachment of the president to “Jim Crow” …
Watch the latter below:
