VA school district blows $34k on CRT training for staff, then claims they don’t teach it

Explosive documents have come to light from Virginia’s Loudoun County Public Schools district showing that they forked over $34,000 for 55 hours of Critical Race Theory training after they denied teaching the racially charged concept in classrooms.

According to Fox News, the coaching for staff and administrators took place last year featuring slides that contrasted “White Individualism” with “Color Group Collectivism.” Conservatives and parents are calling the denial of teaching the theory word games and creative semantics.

The documents that show the training took place were obtained through a pubic record request that was placed by a parent from Loudoun county. They show “culturally responsive” coaching was provided by the Equity Collaborative, which is a consulting firm that offers courses on Critical Race Theory. An invoice also reveals Loudoun County Public Schools shelled out $34,167 to the Equity Collaborative in June of 2020.

The cost covered coaching from May and June and included 25 hours worth of support for the county’s director of equity. That training alone cost more than $15,000.

Ian Prior, who is an executive director of Fight For Schools and a former Justice Department official, had a problem with a number of the bullet points from the presentation and highlighted them as problematic.

“What we’re seeing here is making assumptions about everybody and their life situation based on race,” he contended.

One document that was entitled “Equity, race and learning support: What is cultural competence?” coached staff members to be “culturally competent.”

“The culturally competent professional acknowledges and is aware of his or her own racist, sexist, heterosexist, or other detrimental attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and feelings,” the document states.

It also lists ways to combat racism by using examples to “educate co-workers and close friends about racism and act as a role model, take risks and question the White power structure.”

“Engage in conversations around race and social justice issues with your students and colleagues,” one of the bullet points reads.

“Under ‘Establishing Inclusion’ and ‘Developing a Positive Attitude,’ every culture is excluded except for Black Americans and Latino Americans,” Shawntel Cooper informed Fox News on Thursday. “We shouldn’t be excluding anyone.”

Cooper has two biracial children in Loudoun schools. She has been fearless in speaking up at school board meetings against Critical Race Theory as well as other progressive programs.

“They’re there to learn,” she posited. “The school board needs to keep religion, sexuality, and politics out of school.”

“The second slide that really bugged me, under ‘White Individualism,’ there is an emphasis on white individuals that all they do is think about themselves, or the ‘Color Group Collectivism,’ it emphasized that they’re just worried about the other person or how their needs affect others…they’re placing the child in a category,” she stated.

“My uncle taught me if I have two hands, two feet – you work hard,” she recounted. “That’s always been a trait in my family. You work hard; you get what you want.”

“We have to continue to ask ourselves, why are they pushing this?” Cooper said. “Why are they teaching the teachers critical race theory? What happens to a child when you keep telling them that they are oppressed or the oppressor? Their dreams are rendered out of reach.”

Teaching CRT, she remarked, is the same as teaching racism – “with more racism.”

The school district is still asserting that it does not teach Critical Race Theory to its students. LCPS spokesman Wayde Bayard claimed to Fox News that the documents were shown to “a small group of Loudoun County Public Schools administrators as part of a training on the various schools of thought involved in equity work.”

Bayard invoked Gen. Mark Milley’s recent congressional testimony when he was asked why staff and administrators were being trained in Critical Race Theory if it was not going to be taught in the classroom. “You study many different schools of thought and philosophies so that you have an understanding of the world,” he noted. “CRT has been around for 45 years. It is one of the many schools of thought on race relations.”

Parents and conservatives on Twitter questioned the high price tag for Critical Race Theory instruction to staff and wondered if it was even legal or ethical:
