Tom Cotton suggests ‘Just Do It’ is Nike’s attitude on China genocide, slams kowtowing CEOs

Sparks flared Monday on “Fox News Primetime” as Senator Tom Cotton accused Nike of disinterest in a foreign genocide to which they seemed to back the perpetrators.

There has been an ill-advised campaign among many conglomerates that rush in a piranha-like frenzy to virtue signal their moral superiority to clientele. The “Get Woke, Go Broke” trope has once again claimed as its most recent and most frequent victim, Nike.

During an appearance on “Fox News Primetime,” the GOP senator from Arkansas went on a righteously indignant tirade against the politically regressive company, whose CEO John Donahue, in a courageously stupid act of intellectual suicide, recently stated that his company is a “brand of China.”

Prior to his appearance on the Fox News show, Cotton tweeted out that “It’s been long known that Nike relied on slave labor. Now, they’re publicly acknowledging it,” while linking to an article by the BBC. This has been a battle in which Cotton has been ensconced for some time, having been publicly calling for sanctions against the Communist Party of China as early as 2019.

In the spirit of dark wit, the lawmaker immediately pointed out to Fox News host Jesse Watters that Nike’s attitude towards the genocide in China is “Just Do It.” Cotton, of course, referring to the ongoing litany of human rights abuses visited upon the martyred Uyghur population that includes mass murder, rape, and imprisonment in concentration camps.

“I guess Nike’s attitude towards genocide in China is ‘Just do it,’” he said.

Cotton went on to say that Nike’s cold indifference to the Uyghur genocide speaks to a larger cultural and political picture of the “China lobby.” This is the en masse import of volunteer advocacy for the Chinese Communist Party on the part of “woke CEOs, big Hollywood movie studios, and university presidents who depend on full freight Chinese students coming to their campuses.”

“The lobby firms in Washington. The news networks that are either owned by or affiliate with those Hollywood studios needing access to the Chinese market. They all lobby in effect on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party,” he added.

The senator also commented on the blinding hypocrisy of such antics on the part of the same company that endorsed second-rate football player and first-rate victim, Colin Kaepernick, for his protesting of domestic abuses of power while also acting as an uninventive mouthpiece for the CCP.

“And let’s remember, too, that these woke CEOs saddle their high horse and ride it hard in America,” Cotton explained. “You talk about Nike with Colin Kaepernick. But when they get into China, they kowtow before the powers that be. And they never bring up anything like China’s genocide against its own people or crushing Hong Kong’s autonomy, or unleashing this plague on the United States.”

This is by no means a new controversy to Nike. In 2020, it was reported that there was a campaign, known as “End Uyghur Forced Labor” that accused Nike, as well as Apple, of “bolstering and benefitting” from the exploitation of a Muslim minority group. In fact, the executive director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project said getting companies to shift business away from Xinjiang is critical to convincing the Chinese government to change its policies.

These pleas for justice have apparently fallen on deaf ears as the company that once touted, along with Kaepernick, to “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything” seems to be all too willing to sacrifice trivial things like moral courage and integrity in its quest to satiate its Chinese overlords.

Cotton put it quite succinctly, simply stating that all Nike and similar corporations “care about in China, is money.”
