The writing is on the wall regarding U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., holding onto her third-ranked position as House Republican Conference chair, and it’s not in her favor.
There was already a flurry of talk about frustrations with Cheney reaching a “boiling point,” with lawmakers close to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., reportedly declaring she would be ousted from leadership “by month’s end.” This coming before the GOP leader’s hot mic moment with Fox News.
“I think she’s got real problems. I’ve had it with … I’ve had it with her,” McCarthy can be heard saying before the segment he was on began. “You know, I’ve lost confidence. Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place.”
And now, Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., the second-ranked House Republican, has gone on the record in support of removing Cheney, favoring Rep. Elise Stefanik, R- N.Y., to replace her as House Republican Conference chair.
“House Republicans need to be solely focused on taking back the House in 2022 and fighting against Speaker Pelosi and President Biden’s radical socialist agenda, and Elise Stefanik is strongly committed to doing that, which is why Whip Scalise has pledged to support her for Conference Chair,” Scalise’s spokesperson, Lauren Fine, said in a statement, according to Punchbowl News.

Stefanik really came into her own when she took on a leading role as a member of former President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense.
The irony here being that Cheney, a rabid Trump critic, was chief among the House Republicans voting to impeach him in the second sham impeachment put forth by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Fox News reporter Chad Pergram added fuel to the Stefanik fire, tweeting Tuesday that the rising GOP star “is making calls to shore up support to potentially upend GOP Conf Chair Cheney in leadership tilt.”

There are also reports that other GOP contenders for Cheney’s seat are dropping out, yielding to the stature Stefanik has within the party. Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., chair of the Republican Study Group, withdrew his name for conference chair, according to Fox News.
“I suspect that within the next two weeks Elise Stefanik will be our conference chair,” Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Texas, told the network Tuesday.
Cheney seems to be all but encouraging the scrutiny, as she opted to clap back at the former president on Monday over a statement he released early in the day that read: “The Fraudulent Presidential Election of 2020 will be, from this day forth, known as THE BIG LIE!”
“The 2020 presidential election was not stolen,” Cheney tweeted. “Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.”
The term “big lie” is repeated ad nauseam on the liberal cable news network CNN.
Cheney spokesperson Jeremy Adler said in a statement Wednesday that Cheney will have plenty to say soon.
“This is about much more than a House leadership fight,” Adler said. “Liz will have more to say in the coming days.”
