U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) widened the divide between herself and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Monday by telling reporters that the proposed Capitol riot independent commission should not include Black Lives Matter and Antifa protests.
She contended that the investigation should focus solely on the Jan. 6 protests. Cheney is the third highest-ranking House Republican and infamously voted to impeach former President Trump. She was one of only ten Republicans to do so.
McCarthy said that Cheney’s recent comment “creates difficulties” when GOP leaders don’t “work as one team.”
“There’s a responsibility, if you’re gonna be in leadership, leaders eat last,” McCarthy told Politico on Monday. “And when leaders try to go out, and not work as one team, it creates difficulties.”
He has also spoken with Cheney about toning down her rhetoric but that evidently didn’t go well. When he was asked about her response, McCarthy said: “You be the judge.”
McCarthy has previously indicated that he believes the Capitol riot investigation should also look into instances of political violence by Black Lives Matter and Antifa supporters.
Cheney stated: “What happened on Jan. 6 is unprecedented in our history, and I think that it’s very important that the commission be able to focus on that.” Cheney made her remarks to reporters at the House GOP’s annual policy retreat in Florida.
“I’m very concerned, as all my colleagues are, about the violence that we saw, the BLM, the Antifa violence last summer,” she noted. “I think that’s a different set of issues, a different set of problems, and a different set of solutions.”
“And so, I think it’s very important that the Jan. 6 commission stays focused on what happened on Jan. 6, and what led to that day,” she added.
Cheney reportedly also told Politico that if “we minimize what happened on Jan. 6th and if we appease it, then we will be in a situation where every election cycle, you could potentially have another constitutional crisis.”
“If you get into a situation where we don’t guarantee a peaceful transfer of power, we won’t have learned the lessons of Jan. 6. And you can’t bury our head in the sand,” she continued. “It matters hugely to the survival of the country.”
Republicans reportedly feel that Cheney is more in line with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) than she is with GOP leadership on the matter.
“I think right now, the Republican Party is headed by Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy in the House. I think our elected leaders, you know, are the ones who are in charge of the Republican Party,” Cheney said when asked about former President Trump. “And I think as we look at ’22 and ’24, we’re very much going to be focused on substance and on the issues.”
Cheney also stated that she is not ruling out a run for the presidency in 2024, telling the New York Post, “I’m not ruling anything in or out — never is a long time.”
She took a swipe at potential GOP contenders, specifically Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO). She did not mention either of them by name but her intent was fairly clear.
“I do think that some of our candidates who led the charge, particularly the senators who led the unconstitutional charge, not to certify the election, you know, in my view that’s disqualifying,” claimed Cheney.
“I think that adherence to the Constitution, adherence to your oath has got to be at the top of the list,” she pontificated. “So, I think, you know that certainly will be a factor that I’m looking at and I think a number of voters will be looking at as they decide about ’24.”
Donald Trump Jr. nailed her on Twitter: “I can only assume this means that Lincoln Project Liz is planning a primary challenge to Joe Biden for the Dem nomination because God knows she’d be lucky to break 5% running in the 2024 Republican primary.”
There was little love for Cheney’s hint at running for the presidency on social media:
The GOP getting behind Liz Cheney…… is like jumping in a toilet and pulling the flush handle.

How do you run for POTUS when you lose 70% of you base voters with the Trump impeachment vote?

This woman lives in an alternate reality. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more tone deaf politician. And yes, that includes Nancy Pelosi.
