U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs has called for his Republican colleague, Rep. Liz Cheney, to step down from her leadership position as the chair of the House Republican Conference.
The chairman of the House Freedom Caucus called out Cheney, a Wyoming Republican and third-ranking GOP House member, after her statement blasting President Donald Trump and holding him accountable for the violence that erupted at the U.S. Capitol last week. Biggs told Fox News that Cheney is not representing “Republican ideals.”
“Much more will become clear in the coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough,” Cheney said in a statement Tuesday. “The President of the United States summoned this mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not.”
“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution,” the lawmaker and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, concluded. “I will vote to impeach the President.”

“Well, I’ve called for her resignation. I don’t think she should be the chair of the Republican conference anymore,” Biggs told Fox News host Shannon Bream on Tuesday.
“The reality is, she’s not representing the conference, she’s not representing the Republican ideals,” he added. “And I think that’s a problem. She should not be our conference chair anymore and I’m not alone in that sentiment.”
Biggs predicted there would be a “tremendous groundswell of people” who would not look favorably on Cheney’s words in the coming days, and clarified that the issue is with her leadership position.
“In this instance, she is the conference chair. I think they should be actually whipping against an impeachment vote but they’re not gonna do that, and she’s out there advocating others to join her in impeachment,” he said. “That is wrong. And I think she should resign.”
Newly-elected Republican Congresswoman from Georgia, Marjorie Taylor Greene, echoed the sentiment in a tweet on Wednesday, calling for Cheney’s resignation as GOP conference chair.
“She doesn’t represent Republican voters by supporting this political witch-hunt impeachment of President Trump,” she wrote. “She is not connected to the base and is voting for a hurtful lie.”

“When Representative Cheney came out for impeachment today, she failed to consult with the Conference, failed to abide by the spirit of the rules of the Republican Conference, and ignored the preferences of Republican voters,” Rep. Matt Rosendale said in a statement Tuesday.
“She is weakening our conference at a key moment for personal political gain and is unfit to lead. She must step down as Conference Chair,” the Montana Republican added.

Reps Paul Gosar and Jim Jordan also joined the call for Cheney to step down:
Rep. Paul Gosar, who sought to overturn the election, said Liz Cheney should be removed as conference chair. He joins Jim Jordan.

While GOP Reps. John Katko of New York and Illinois’ Adam Kinzinger have also called for Trump’s impeachment, Rep. Debbie Lesko, who is also a member of the Freedom Caucus, told the Washington Examiner she would not be backing any efforts to invoke the 25th Amendment, to impeach or to censure the president.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy brought up censure as a possibility in a letter to House Republicans on Monday. Biggs made it clear he would not back a censure effort either.
He blasted Democrats in a floor speech on Tuesday, accusing them of “stoking the fire instead of dousing the flames.”

Slamming their resolution to get Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office, Biggs said the Democrats are doing exactly what they blamed the president of doing last week.
“It pours gas on the smoldering embers which consist of tens of millions who believe the integrity of the election was questionable,” he said.
