Dem. Rep. just can’t understand why Kyrsten Sinema doesn’t vote according to her sexuality

Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) tore into Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) for blocking the Equality Act and the $15 minimum wage and called it “extraordinary” that she would stand against the legislation because she is LGBTQ.

Jones told Politico that he has an issue with a number of moderate Democrats: “I think we need more progressives in the Congress.”

According to Politico: “Jones told me the greatest lesson he learned while working at the Justice Department during the Obama administration is “how not to waste time trying to appease Republicans who are not engaging in good faith over policy.”’

“The bone I have to pick is not with the failure of West Virginia to elect a more progressive candidate,” he noted referring to Senator Joe Manchin. He then pointedly went after Sinema: “The bones that I have to pick are with other states that could easily be electing progressive candidates to the Senate. This idea that the senior senator from Arizona, who’s openly LGBTQ, would be blocking the Equality Act or the $15 minimum wage after beginning her career in politics as a Green Party candidate — it is just extraordinary.”

Jones went on to say that H.R. 1, The For the People Act, is the No. 1 bill he wants to see passed while he is serving in Congress: “Any Democratic senator would be blocking voting rights after winning on the backs of black and brown people and their elections is an abdication and something that does not have to be tolerated in a Democratic primary.”

Senator Sinema has been in the headlines lately for not only giving a thumbs-down to increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour but for wearing a ring that says “F**k Off” in an alleged message to her detractors in the Democratic Party.

On Thursday, Jones also called objections to Washington, D.C. statehood “racist trash” during a speech on the House floor.

“I have had enough of my colleagues’ racist insinuations that somehow the people of Washington D.C. are incapable or even unworthy of our democracy,” Jones, remarked.

He also tweeted: “One of my Republican colleagues objected to #DCStatehood because DC doesn’t have its own landfill. With all the racist trash they’ve been espousing in this debate, it’s no wonder they’re worried about where to put it.”

Chaos ensued on the chamber floor and Republicans were furious after Jones’ statements.

“The truth is there is no good faith argument for disenfranchising 700,000 people, most of whom are people of color,” Jones went on to state as GOP lawmakers called for a point of order.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) requested that Jones agree to have his remarks stricken from the congressional record.

Harris told Forbes that Jones’ statement was “unbecoming of a Representative and violates the rules of the House,” especially during a “time of growing discord,” and charged that Jones “realized his words were inappropriate.”

Jones eventually relented and had his comments removed from the record. He then claimed that the GOP’s “desperate objections are about fear.”

“Fear that in D.C. their white supremacist politics will no longer play,” he remarked. “Fear that soon enough, white supremacist politics won’t work anywhere in America. Fear that if they don’t rig our democracy, they won’t win.”

Jones’ comments were an attack against remarks made by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who allegedly stated that giving D.C. statehood would block the Capitol from being a “well-rounded working-class state.”

“I had no idea there were so many syllables in the word ‘white,’ ” Jones snarked.

He then hit out at Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) after he noted that if D.C. were to become a state it would be the only one “without an airport, without a car dealership, without a capital city, and without a landfill.” The District reportedly has a number of car dealerships.

“My goodness. With all the racist trash my colleagues have brought to this debate, I can see why my colleagues are worried about a place to put it,” Jones quipped.

The House went on to approve D.C. for statehood but it faces uncertainty in the Senate. The Biden administration has come out in favor of the move and Republicans are staunchly against it since it would almost certainly hand Democrats two more votes in the Senate.

“Establishing the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth as the 51st state will make our Union stronger and more just,” the Office of Management and Budget proclaimed in a statement. “Washington, D.C. has a robust economy, a rich culture, and a diverse population of Americans from all walks of life who are entitled to full and equal participation in our democracy.”
