‘Bottomless Pinocchio’: WaPo fact-checker calls out ‘recidivist’ Biden for repeating three false claims

The Washington Post has labeled President Biden as a “recidivist” after he continues to repeat a trio of false claims that are “impervious to fact-checking.” One of those has earned the president four Pinocchios.

“It’s still relatively early in the Biden presidency, so patterns are hard to discern,” Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote in a column on Friday. “But there are three claims President Biden has made that appear impervious to fact-checking, given that he’s already said them at least three times.”

Topping the list of whoppers is Biden’s claim that the number of Americans who have perished in the pandemic has exceeded the number of people killed in “World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War combined.” More than 500,000 people have officially died due to COVID-19 but that number is nowhere near the mortality totals of those wars.

The number of servicemen who were killed is approximately 580,000 and the combat deaths totaled more than 390,000. Making his claim even more ridiculous is the fact that Biden has now started including the almost 3,000 deaths that occurred on 9/11. He’s repeated this fib at least four times and was awarded two Pinocchios.

Number two on the list concerns former President Trump’s tax legislation that he signed in 2017. Over and over, Biden has claimed that 83 percent of funding connected to that bill would go to “the top 1 percent” of Americans. In reality, according to the Tax Policy Center, over 80 percent of taxpayers were recipients of a tax cut in 2018 and the top 1 percent received 20.5 percent. That falsehood earned Biden two Pinocchios.

According to the Washington Post, Biden’s biggest lie is his claim that the voting law in Georgia would end voting hours at 5 p.m. Actually, polling places have the option to stay open until 7 p.m. under the law. The legislation also established a new day for early voting on a Saturday, as well as two days of early voting that take place on Sundays. That lie earned him four Pinocchios.

Even Biden’s White House press secretary Jen Psaki seems to either be hedging on that fact, or she is confused. On Thursday she said, “It standardizes the ending of voting every day at 5, right?”

“What I’m worried about is how un-American this whole initiative is. It’s sick. It’s sick,” Biden said last week. “Deciding that you’re going to end voting at five o’clock when working people are just getting off work.”

Then Biden wrote in a statement the next day: “Among the outrageous parts of this new state law, it ends voting hours early so working people can’t cast their vote after their shift is over.” Biden repeated the same fib during an appearance on ESPN Wednesday night.

The media seems to pick up whatever facts Biden spews and runs with them. Case in point… the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported the Biden Georgia law claim as factual and then had to run a correction.

“Some readers have noticed, sending us puzzled emails about why the president keeps making these statements,” Kessler noted. “In fact, the president said all three of these claims at various points on March 31, which is why it caught our attention.”

To earn the moniker of “Bottomless Pinocchio,” Biden would have to repeat a false claim 20 times or more. It appears he’s well on his way to that goal.

“The bar for the Bottomless Pinocchio is high: Claims must have received Three or Four Pinocchios from The Fact Checker, and they must have been repeated at least 20 times,” Kessler said. “Twenty is a sufficiently robust number that there can be no question the politician is aware that his or her facts are wrong.”
